Could a 5-year-old understand this?

We’ve all been in that situation when someone takes control of the conversation, rambling on and on and on – using complex language and buzz words.

You’re left feeling confused and wondering, “what on earth are they talking about – what is the point?”

How often have you been in a meeting and notice people start to check their emails and phones as they lose interest in what the speaker is saying?

Learn to get your point across quickly and clearly.

Stop trying to show off your knowledge and expertise – it’s not about you.

The only thing that matters is that people actually understand what you're saying – and if they can’t cut through the complicated language, your message is lost.

Ask yourself “Could a 5-year-old understand this?

Example:

  • Complex: ‘The consultants recommended some compatible relative options; we must expedite this immediately.’

What do they actually mean?

  • Simple: ‘The consultants gave us a few choices that seem to fit. We need to make a quick decision on what to do next.’

Same message – different language – which would you be more likely to listen to and understand.

Consider that sentence in the context a presentation full of this complex language – when exactly do you think you would start to switch off – 5 minutes? 10 minutes?

If you’re guilty of using weak or complex language you can make an immediate impact to your confidence and how people respond to you by changing the words you choose to use.
