In the fast-paced world of business, it’s tempting to reach for quick fixes when things go wrong. A dip in performance? Cut costs. Miscommunication? Add another meeting. Culture issues? Plan a team-building day. But if you’ve been following this series, you’ll know that these quick remedies often amount to nothing more than slapping a plaster on a much deeper wound. The real solution lies in taking a step back and addressing the root causes first—starting with the foundation of how your team communicates and aligns with your business strategy.
Many businesses fall into the trap of treating symptoms rather than addressing the core of the issue. Before we dive deeper into how your team can thrive, let’s briefly revisit the equation we’ve been discussing:
The Success Equation: Communication + Culture + Strategic Alignment = Sustainable Business Growth.
In Article 1, we introduced this equation, explaining why these three elements are critical to long-term success. And in Article 2, we talked about communication as the foundational skill that enables everything else to fall into place.
Now, let’s get to the heart of the problem most businesses face when trying to fix things—starting at the wrong point.
The Temptation of Quick Fixes
It’s easy to see why businesses might go for quick solutions when the pressure is on. It’s human nature to focus on the most immediate, visible pain points. Maybe it’s poor sales, low morale, or a decline in customer satisfaction. Leaders often respond to these symptoms by tweaking performance goals, running morale-boosting activities, or slashing budgets.
But while these short-term actions might offer temporary relief, they don’t solve the deeper issue that caused those symptoms in the first place. It’s like flying a plane and constantly adjusting the altimeter without checking if your heading is actually correct.
What’s more, many businesses don’t even realise that these problems are symptoms of a larger issue: a misaligned foundation. And, often, the most effective way to set things right is simpler than you think—if you start in the right place.
Why Start with Communication?
In the last article, we explored the importance of communication as the foundation upon which everything else rests. Without open, clear, and consistent communication, how can you expect to set a culture or execute a strategy that everyone is on board with? Without the right communication tools, your team is working with blind spots and unspoken assumptions—leading to frustration, wasted energy, and constant firefighting.
Take a moment to think about your team. Are you seeing these kinds of issues?
If any of these sound familiar, it’s not a problem with your team’s talent or their commitment. It’s a problem with how they’re communicating and aligning—two things that are entirely fixable with the right guidance.

The Cost of Not Fixing the Foundation
Many businesses put off rechecking and resetting their foundational communication skills because they think it will be disruptive or costly in terms of time and energy. But that perception couldn’t be more wrong.
Not addressing the foundation costs far more in the long run—especially when you factor in miscommunications that lead to errors, missed opportunities, and employee disengagement. Imagine if everyone on your team were working in lockstep, moving in the same direction without confusion or wasted effort. That’s what you achieve when you address foundational communication first.
The Order Matters
The equation we’ve introduced follows a logical order because each part builds on the one before it:
Many businesses want to jump straight to “fixing” the culture or improving strategy, but without addressing communication first, those efforts are likely to fail. The reason is simple: culture and strategy cannot thrive in a vacuum. They need a foundation of clear, consistent communication to be fully understood, embraced, and executed.
Practical Next Steps
So, where do you go from here? Here are a couple of practical steps to help you start aligning your team’s communication skills with the bigger picture:
Before you dive into trying to fix your business’s surface-level issues, take the time to understand what’s truly causing them. Addressing communication first isn’t just a quick fix—it’s a game changer. By laying the foundation with clear, consistent communication, you’re setting yourself up to build a strong, unified culture and a strategy that everyone understands and can work toward.
The next article will delve into how your team’s culture can either elevate or undermine your business strategy—and why it needs to be set on the back of solid communication. Stay tuned, and if you’re ready to get started today, don’t hesitate to reach out.

1 个月so true that Christen Killick! While the quick fix might seem the right thing to do, you're actually better off in the long run by taking a step back and working out what's causing the issue. It takes guts to do so, and consider the role you play in it, but it is also what makes business better in the long run ??
