Costco stands firm on DEI and wins attention
As many US companies continue to scale back their DEI initiatives, Costco is standing firm on its commitment. The company's shareholders voted overwhelmingly to reject an anti-DEI measure last Thursday, and the company's public support has sparked widespread attention, with a predominantly positive reaction.
Media coverage shot up on January 23rd after the shareholder vote, with even more articles published the next day as local outlets began to report on the move. This generated significant public interest (226k engagements), but the conversation turned even more heads on social media.?
Posts on X received over 732k engagements, and was the one platform where conservative backlash was more prominent. This came mostly from Robby Starbuck, who posted about an Attorney General warning Costco that DEI policies are illegal. Even with his disapproval, there were several top posts that showed support, including Occupy Democrats?and writer Wajahat Al.?
On Instagram, however, engagement was even higher. Now This Impact, A Girl Has No President, and Occupy Democrats all earned tens of thousands of engagements with their posts in support of the announcement.
Costco has stood out from the crowd on this one amidst a sea of rollbacks from companies on these initiatives, and the support they have received has seen lots of engagement across the social web.
Navigating the future of news consumption and distribution
Yesterday, we were excited to be joined by Ryan Broderick, Mosheh Oinounou, and Dervilla Mullan for a webinar about the future of news consumption and distribution.?
It was a lively, wide-ranging discussion that touched on news creators and their role in the news ecosystem, distrust in traditional media, and how AI could play a role in news (or not!) in the future.?
You can watch the full webinar back (and follow along with the discussion) here, with key topics including:?
