The cost of your silence
What is the cost of waiting to find the right words?
?
The world right now is so awfully dark that it can be hard for even the most talented communicator to find words that will adequately convey what you want to say. ??
?
But when we hesitate, waiting to find the perfect words, we miss a critical opportunity to show up for our friends, family, colleagues, and employees.
?
This week, I’m not writing about the newsletter topic I had planned because it feels so trivial given the horrifying nightmarish events unfolding in Israel and Gaza.
?
The devastating intentional destruction of human life.
The violent and sickening actions fueled by hatred.
The shocking lack of empathy.
The appalling apathy for the suffering of other human beings.
The global rise of antisemitism that has brought it to everyone’s front door with an intensity not seen in years.
The vicious ugly hateful content being spewed online.
?
There is a cost to our silence that people don’t talk about and it’s not just the guilt we feel for not speaking up.
?
When we stay quiet:
?
·?????? We fail to support those in our lives and communities who are feeling completely alone in their suffering, fear, and anguish. We abandon and further isolate them.
·?????? We selfishly choose to make our own comfort the priority.
·?????? We fail to challenge our ego - we’re so worried about saying the wrong thing and being judged by others negatively for it.
·?????? We choose to live values of convenience, hypocritically picking and choosing when to act in alignment with our values.
·?????? We fail to overcome our fear of stepping out from the crowd.
?
I’ve stayed quiet so many times in my life when I should have spoken up.
I don’t pretend to have the right words, nor do I expect my words to change anything, but I feel compelled to speak out because silence makes me complicit.

“We have manicured out of our lives and our feeds and our day-to-day existence the need for any and all interactions with anyone who has not been hand-picked by us, who is not of the same class or race or political position... And in doing so, we have eroded our empathy.”? - Xochitl Gonzalez – Staff writer, The Atlantic

1 年May I ask you something, please? And please try to answer and not deviate with vague stuff. If you can't, that's okay. Seriously. But if you can, please do so. WHY is there this so-called anti-semitism in the world, and not anti-italian, anti-turkish, anti-greek, anti-polish, anti-cambodia, anti-canada, anti-brazil, anti-slovakia? WHY is the whole world divided with anti-semitism ONLY, and not with all the anti-... mentioned above? WHY should there be a division of semitism and anti-semitism? WHY black or white with Israel only?
