The Cost Of Talking About Diversity Without Measuring And Optimising Inclusion

The Cost Of Talking About Diversity Without Measuring And Optimising Inclusion

In our last discussion, we delved into three alarming trends in organisational practices, specifically in diversity?and inclusion (D&I), leadership training, and employee engagement.?The examination has unearthed crucial inefficiencies that urgently demand a strategic update.?

Here's a detailed exploration:

1. The Imbalance in Diversity and Inclusion Efforts

A significant 99% of current D&I initiatives disproportionately focus on the "diversity" aspect, severely neglecting "inclusion."?This imbalance is not just counterproductive but downright harmful, as?metrics for inclusion?are rarely gauged or optimised. Consequently, this oversight leads to an escalation in workplace burnout, with employees feeling undervalued and alienated,?despite ostensibly diverse environments. More information here.

?

2. Leadership Programs Missing the Mark

Recent findings from MIT Sloan Management Review?have revealed that most leadership programs are failing clients because their evaluation is based on the amount of information and entertainment they provide instead of measuring their impact on those who matter the most, the teams, and the trajectory of the leaders' career.?This superficial approach?fosters?nothing more than?a cycle of ineffective and uninspiring training while it is risking the future of the companies investing in them.

?

3. Ineffective Employee Engagement Programs

In an extensive review of over 90 employee engagement initiatives, only voluntary work demonstrated a marginally positive effect on actual engagement.?The remainder, though enjoyable, failed to genuinely engage employees, suggesting that?mere?entertainment is?insufficient?for fostering true job satisfaction and engagement. More details here .?

?

The Stark Outcome:

These?disconcerting?trends have circled us back to a familiar point—employee engagement levels?have been sharply declining despite heavy investment in nicely packaged programs.?

?

?Forward-Thinking Suggestions:

  • Invest in Solutions that are up to date, data-driven and adept at diagnosing underlying issues?while transparently measuring progress. ?It is clear that over 70% of engagement is up to the leaders so investment in them should have the highest ROI.

?

  • Demand More from D&I Conversations:?It's imperative to challenge the status quo if?discussions about diversity fail to incorporate actionable, quantifiable strategies for inclusion. Reject any approach that settles for superficial diversity without substantive inclusion,?and advocate for holistic strategies that enrich your organisational culture.

Very insightful information! Employee engagement programs often miss the point because leaders aren't engaged with their employees. Many still believe that pizza parties and ax throwing events once a quarter are enough.
