The cost of security on IBMi

It is a well known fact that we are witnessing cyber crime like never before. Ransomwares, viruses and many other instances of malware are floating all over the internet plus targeted attacks of corporate espionage is something of concern to many organizations as well.

Even for a desktop at home, it goes without saying that we would have to worry about extra costs of security like anti virus softwares, anti malware, ransomware protection and firewalls. At risk here is your personal data, memories and confidential information probably your bank account information and identity information.

However, things get serious as well as legal when you are running a business because then you have customer data, their names, addresses, card details and phone numbers. How secure do you think that data is? or another way to ask is, how vulnerable?

Having the obligation to protect the data that has been entrusted to you, it is quite obvious that even if it hurts the pocket; you would go the extra mile to invest in the best security solutions. Maybe even hiring security consultants to protect this data because eventually you have a reputation to keep and it would shake the customer's confidence if their data was compromised while it was with you.

There are however, great efforts being made in all platforms to secure data and patch vulnerabilities and all that is good and proper but the question to ask is... at what cost and at what pace?

The design of a system plays a key role in its vulnerability and the more the vulnerabilities of any system increase, the more the risks increase and proportionally, the costs. The number of servers you have are the number of opporunities for any targeted attacks and the risks are multiplied. Howe many servers would you rather secure, less or more?

operating system vulnerability

Things are getting better for the other operating systems as per the metrics provided by NIST. But on the IBMi, they have always been better!

What costs have you incurred in securing your IBMi so far?

Switch to the IBMi and move from fear to fearlessness!

While I agree that this information is awesome, I would caution IBM i shops to not use this as an excuse to be complacent with their IBM i Security.? All one has to do is pay attention to the headlines to see how yet another mis-configuration led to another breach or attack.?? This is also backed up by this chart from IBM X-force. ? https://www.ibm.com/security/resources/xforce/xfisi/iframe.html?mhsrc=ibmsearch_a&mhq=breaches%20by%20type%20and%20xforce . ?? Please remember what I've been saying for years:? IBM i is secure-able - it does not come secure out of the box.?? We need to all remember this and actually use the features IBM has provided us to secure our systems and data.
