In an age dominated by convenience and instant gratification, the rise of over-consumption has become a defining characteristic of our modern lifestyles. From fast fashion to fleeting technology upgrades, we are constantly lured into a cycle of “Buy Now, Pay Later”—but what are the real costs of this mindset? The Netflix documentary Buy Now - The Shopping Conspiracy sheds light on the hidden tactics used by the world’s leading brands to fuel this cycle. Watching it has not only deepened my resolve to live and work more sustainably but also affirmed the direction in which my brand, STYLISA, is evolving.
This is a deeply personal journey for me, rooted in a desire to balance ambition with accountability. It’s a journey I’d like to share, not only because it has changed how I live but also because I hope it inspires others to reimagine success through the lens of sustainability, independence, and impact.
The Seduction of Over-Consumption
Over-consumption thrives on a narrative of scarcity and status. We’re told we’ll miss out if we don’t buy the latest product or that our worth is tied to how much we own. The fashion industry, for example, is a master of this narrative, promoting seasonal trends and rapid turnaround to make last month’s purchases feel obsolete.
However, this culture comes at an alarming cost. Globally, we discard 92 million tonnes of textiles annually, and the environmental impact of mass production extends far beyond clothing. It pollutes waterways, depletes natural resources, and exploits labour forces, creating a global system of inequality that many of us unknowingly support with every transaction.
The Buy Now documentary revealed how these issues are embedded in broader consumption trends, from electronics to food. It forced me to reflect on how I, too, had been caught in this cycle—and what it takes to break free.
My Journey Towards Sustainability
My sustainability journey began with fashion, an industry I have worked in and loved for many years. Initially, my focus was on maximising the lifecycle of my wardrobe. Renting out pieces I no longer needed on platforms like HURR and By Rotation opened my eyes to the power of the sharing economy. It wasn’t just about style—it was about challenging the notion that owning more equals living better.
However, my focus soon broadened. Beyond sustainable style, I started to see the threads of over-consumption running through every aspect of life. The pressure to buy more, achieve more, and do more had left me chasing professional success at the expense of personal foundations: health, relationships, and peace of mind. It was this realisation that prompted a profound shift in how I approach not only my lifestyle but also my career and projects.
Building a Life of Independence and Impact
Today, STYLISA is evolving into a brand centred on more than fashion. It’s about styling your life for success, independence, and impact. This evolution reflects my belief that sustainability isn’t a single choice—it’s a series of interconnected decisions that shape who we are and what we stand for.
The projects I am focused on—whether it’s The Blair Project ’s hydrogen innovation initiatives, the AR EdTech platform Verciti , or even my content series like Lisa’s Life Lessons—all carry a sustainability thread. They are about empowering others to rethink traditional systems and build solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
The Case for Moving Away from Over-Consumption
Breaking free from over-consumption requires us to redefine success. Instead of more, we should strive for better: better quality, better relationships, and better alignment between our values and our actions. Here are a few steps we can all take:
Looking Ahead
The move away from over-consumption isn’t just a lifestyle change—it’s a cultural shift. It requires us to challenge deeply ingrained habits and narratives, both personally and collectively. For me, it’s about using my platform and projects to inspire others to think differently about consumption, success, and sustainability.
The journey isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary. Over-consumption isn’t just depleting the planet—it’s depleting us. By choosing sustainability, we can create a future that values people, the planet, and purposeful progress over profit and possession.
This is how we truly style our lives for success.
What steps are you taking to move away from over-consumption? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Together, we can create meaningful change.
