The Cost of Not Hiring an Architect
Ian Motley
I help Architects win better fees while reducing scope creep by applying 'Choice Architecture' to their fee proposals.
Approximately 40 years ago I watched a neighbor build their dream home.?
They decided to save money by employing a local builder to design it for them.?
The end result was exactly what they wanted, at least so they thought, 12 months later they realized they had problems!?
The house was too hot, too dark and the acoustics were terrible.?
In summary… they weren’t comfortable.?
So, they ended up spending even more money fixing the issues.?
First, they installed more windows to add (indirect) light to the family room, then they installed new exterior awnings to provide shade from the direct sunlight, and finally, they purchased lots of soft furnishings to dull the echo… all at their own cost of course.?
Now we all know that a wise Architect would have considered all these issues and designed accordingly.?
It’s like the old saying goes: ?
“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit,?
wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad”?
- Brian O’Driscoll.
So what can we learn from this??
As an industry, we need to get better at communicating our wisdom.?
We need to use case studies to demonstrate the difference between good and bad design.?
We need to educate our potential clients so they understand the value we bring to the project.
We’ve been helping Architects educate their clients for over 15 years.
We’ve gained a lot of wisdom over that time.?
Let’s talk about how our wisdom can help your design firm; charge premium fees, reduce scope creep and get more clients to say yes.?
Message me and we'll organize a Zoom call.
Let’s make 2025 your best yet!
Warm regards, ?
