The Cost of Corrosion

The Cost of Corrosion

The global cost of corrosion is estimated to be US$2.5 trillion, which is equivalent to 3.4% of the global GDP. According to data from the Financial Times, corrosion in its many forms is estimated to cost the global economy $3 trillion a year due to damage to steel buildings and infrastructure. A study from the University of Edinburgh estimated that corrosion and wear costs the UK approximately £80 billion per annum.

Corrosion is a serious issue as it hampers the overall industrial ecosystems worldwide, and corrosion by-products, such as rust, contaminate water bodies. Thus, corrosion can hamper the long-term viability of infrastructural assets, while corrosion-led pollution is detrimental to the environment and ecosystems.

So what's the solution?

There are numerous ways to slow or stop rusting. Applying a protective coating to the metal can help prevent corrosion. This is not a long-term fix, but it is far more corrosion-resistant than bare metal. To prevent water and other elements from reaching the metal, the coatings must be routinely removed and reapplied because they eventually chip. This procedure can be expensive and time-consuming.

GRP - The Sustainable Solution

A more permanent and cost-effective solution would be to go with a GRP option.

GRP has an extremely long service life since it is resistant to corrosion, 50+ years in fact. Additionally, GRP is able to preserve its structural integrity and load-carrying capacities whereas corrosion affects metal in such a way as to render it unsafe.

Our GRP products also require little to no maintenance. There is no need for costly re-painting in order to prevent rust, saving both valuable time and money. Easily installed, warm to the touch, and non-conductive, GRP has a vast number of advantages as a sustainable long-term solution.

The money spent on repair and maintenance is astonishing! GRP clearly a winner with its anti-corrosive properties and no need for ongoing maintenance.
