The cost of convenience

The cost of convenience

Time and convenience. Something most people value — and in some instances— are willing to pay a premium to preserve and enjoy.

Whether it’s the growing popularity of Amazon’s Prime program or the red-hot meal replacement business, consumers do have (costlier) options to maximize their time.

One more example is the pictured ad from Ontario's Food Basics supermarket chain that caught my attention. I noticed two of their Selection brand cheese items on sale in this week's flyer for $3.88.

  • Item No. 1: Their shredded cheese in a 320 gram package
  • Item No. 2: Their regular line of cheese in a 450 gram package

So, if you needed grated cheese for a homemade pizza or tacos and were in a jam time-wise, you could grab the shredded cheese. Keep in mind you would be getting 40% less for the same price.

Considering my frugal ways and the fact I do have grater, I know which one I would choose. I guess it all depends, though, on how much time and convenience matter to you.

Special note: Not all convenience comes at a defined cost. See one of my earlier posts on a special initiative Loblaws has on weekends.
