The Cost of Complacency - Will We Heed the Warning Signs?

We nod in agreement, repeat the talking point, and often go about our merry way, not pausing to consider how this simple truth should be applied to our own lives.

What exactly does complacency kill?

Complacency kills relationships and freedom.?

Our human nature leans toward complacency in our relationship with God. It can be like a default setting. We take Him for granted, then call on Him when trouble comes.

If we had abided more closely, maybe trouble could have been avoided. We are great at getting ourselves into messes and asking God to get us out instead of proactively seeking His ways to prevent pain.

When we are not walking with the Lord, it is not uncommon for relationships with others to be strained or destroyed. Relationships take work. It is easy to take loved ones for granted until we realize with sadness that we have squandered time and blessing.?

The same can be true about our relationship with ourselves. Are we complacent about honoring God in our personal growth and development, health and wellness, finances,? or professional lives?

If so, we are likely to see our dreams die.?

If we allow complacency in our relationship with Jesus, we limit our spiritual freedom from sin, guilt, and shame. Complacency can cause us to settle for less than God’s best. In contrast, when we walk with Christ, we can become all He created us to be.?

Complacency also puts our physical freedom at risk. We’ve all read of great nations conquered by enemies, but I contend each was first lost through complacency within their own hearts, minds, and borders. People became comfortable with freedom. Too comfortable. Comfort can lead to complacency, which puts citizens at risk.

I host a weekly podcast, and in a recent interview, I spoke with a young man who grew up in Venezuela. He watched first-hand as socialist and communist ideologies infected the nation, ultimately leading to economic and cultural collapse.

He remembers days of freedom and prosperity, when food and water were plentiful and opportunities for human flourishing abounded. Like frogs in pots of boiling water, they ignored warning signs and took freedom for granted until the reality of its disappearance became their daily life.?

We must not let that happen in America.

God has given us warning signs. Not only have we witnessed cultural warning signs as we slid into defining evil as good, wrong as right,?and truth as lies, but He recently gave us signs and wonders in the skies. You may have seen the remarkable lightning strikes on New Year’s Eve 2024, all striking iconic cities?and buildings in the United States.

The Washington Monument, the US Capitol in Washington, DC., the Empire State Building, and the One World Tower at Ground Zero in New York City were all struck by lightning on our New Year's Eve. The significance of this should not be overlooked.

Lighting strikes are not uncommon, but four strikes on the same notable night in iconic locations signifying government and cultural power is very unusual, and I would suggest it is a miraculous display of God’s love. He has blessed us with lightning bolts as a wake-up call to seek Him and submit to His power and authority.

We, The People, have been given another chance to pray and work towards renewal and reformation. If we do not wisely use this season of opportunity to impact others for?Christ, our freedom can be lost for generations.?

The Lord is trying to shake us out of complacency and activate the spirit of revival and repentance within us as individuals and a nation. Will we heed His warning signs?

I pray the answer is yes.?

John 8:36: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and? pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven? and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
