Cost-benefit of Atlassian's end of Server licences - what's the bottom line?

So you've seen the recent announcement from Atlassian about their Server licences going off support completely by 2024 and if you have Server licences hopefully you have started to put the pieces together about how it's going to affect you. Why now? It's not until 2024! Because there are some pretty significant impacts on your bottom line and a few of your options evaporate by Feb 2021.

On the 2nd of Feb 2021, Data Centre licence prices go up. By as much as 114%..

The prices of both Server and Data Centre licences are going to increase in the new year. Cloud has already had it's increase. Atlassian will honour the current list prices if you act before then and there is still time to do so. As a Gold Partner, I can lock your current pricing in for as long as 24 months, you can get 12 months yourself. If you haven't quite decided whether you will head to Cloud or Data Centre, then buying yourself some time at the current prices could save you big time.

Loyalty discounts for those ready to migrate

There are a whole suite of options available for those ready to migrate to Cloud or Data Centre. And they are quite generous options too.

Cloud?

  • Atlassian is offering to match your current Server instance in a like for like Cloud trial! For example, if you have 500 users on support in Jira, Confluence, Service Management Server until 24th of Jan 2022 - they'll match that in the cloud on an extended free trial. Not bad!
  • For long time Server customers, you can leverage up to a 55% discount on an Annual Cloud subscription. Also not bad! The discount decreases over time though so you will need to act.

Data Centre?

  • Again there are loyalty discounts for long time Server customers. You can leverage up to a 40% discount on some of the Data Centre tools. Terms apply so you'll need to enquire.
  • Purchase Data Centre before the prices go up! And they are going up.


The Bottom Line

The reality is that the prices are going to go up regardless of which route you take. There are many variables to consider too. Plugins will play a huge role - I recommend looking seriously at your plugin stack and cutting some fat before migrating to subscription licencing. User count will play a role - Data Centre starts at 500 users so if you are a Server customer with 100 users, expect a significant price increase. However, Data Centre and Cloud have more pricing tiers than Server so if you had between 2,000 and 10,000 users on Server, then you may see some grace.
