The Cost of Not Believing in Yourself
The Cost of Not Believing in Yourself
As a first time manager, I had plenty of self-doubt. I had all the limiting beliefs: "Why me?," "Who am I?," "I know nothing," "I brought no value," "I can't bring change," "I can't manage a team," "I can't stand my ground." This stopped me in many ways and almost ended my career before it started. It cost me my confidence and competency. It cost me developing trust with my team. It cost me being seen as valuable.?
But I knew I had to take back control. Once I did, everything changed for me. I was the subject matter expert. I was delivering results through my team. I was fought over by other department leadership. In short, believing in myself made all the difference.
?How Beliefs Affect Your Life?
Your beliefs are like filters through which you see the world—and they heavily influence your behavior and actions. So, if you have a belief that you're not good enough or that you can't do something, chances are you're going to act in accordance with that belief and not even try to do the thing you doubt yourself on. On the other hand, if you believe in yourself and your abilities, you're much more likely to take risks, persevere through challenges, and ultimately be successful.?
In other words, what you believe has a direct impact on your life—for better or for worse. So, if you want to create a life you love and be successful in your career, it's important to ensure that your beliefs are serving you well. Here's how to get started:
- Pay attention to your inner dialogue. What kind of things are you telling yourself on a daily basis? If your inner dialogue is negative or self-defeating, it's time for a change.?

- Identify your core beliefs. What do you believe about yourself, others, and the world around you? If your core beliefs are negative or based on fear, they're probably holding you back in some way.?
- Challenge your beliefs . . . with evidence! If there's evidence that disproves your negative or self-limiting beliefs, it's time to let those beliefs go and replace them with something more accurate and empowering.?
- Practice positive affirmations . . . daily! Choose one or two positive affirmations that resonated with you and make them a part of your daily routine—repeat them to yourself when you wake up in the morning, before bed at night, or anytime throughout the day when you need a pick-me-up.?
If you want to be successful in your career, it’s important to make sure your beliefs are serving you well. Pay attention to your inner dialogue and identify any negative or self-limiting core beliefs that may be holding you back from reaching your full potential. Remember, what you believe has a direct impact on your life—for better or for worse—so choose wisely!?
