The Cost of Being the Real You

I’ve got a question that I want you to really think about—are you willing to pay the price of being the real you?
Allow me to elaborate. Personally, being the real me has cost me a lot of relationships. Because being the real me has caused misunderstanding between friends and family members. People being upset, people wanting to or attempting to extort me, people imitating me, and people calling my phone that shouldn’t be calling my phone. My list goes on and on. But that is the cost of me being myself.
The truth is, there is no fairy-tale world where being yourself means that you’re a hundred percent valued by everyone. Because being yourself means that you’re willing to be misunderstood, and you’re willing to hurt other people’s feelings to get what you want.
I know that a lot of people don’t want to hear that, but the truth is, other people are not always going to understand your vision. Sometimes, you simply have to tell people things that they don’t want to hear.
This is the price you have to pay if you choose to be authentic to yourself, your vision, the way you go about handling your business, and personal relationships. Yes, some people’s feelings will get hurt, and as a CEO, you must be okay with that. You should accept the fact that not everyone will like you, and that certain people on your team will not respect your vision.

The real you will make mistakes. The real you will say things that offends people. The real you will make content that sometimes, doesn’t come across the way you want it to. The real you will do your best, but your best is never going to be good enough.
So, shift that mindset and understand that happiness is actually just an emotion—that’s not really the goal. The real goal is peace of mind, and the only way to have peace of mind is by being the real you.
