A Cosmic View is meant here as a View of the World not restricted to Planet Earth, but considering the whole Universe. Planet Earth is a part of Cosmos and it is scientifically accepted that Cosmos has evolved from billions of years ago, giving origin to cosmic formations like galaxies and to the Solar System, including Planets, among them Planet Earth.
An integral part of Cosmos, more specifically of Planet Earth is Anthropos. Cosmos influence Planet Earth and therefore influence Anthropos as a part of it. Also, Anthropos influence Planet Earth and thereby Cosmos, although the characteristics and magnitudes are quite different. As an example of the second kind of influence, not usually taken in consideration, by bombarding the Moon, Anthropos would be influencing some how Cosmos, and this has already happened. We don't know how this influence will evolve in the future as the human ambition advances and technology makes progress.
In the middle of this interaction is the Biosphere, which includes Anthropos, exerts influence on Planet Earth and is reciprocally influenced by it. Biosphere has responded by benefiting from good influences and adapting to and mitigating the detrimental ones. It has been found through science that in the past the consequences on humankind of the detrimental effects have been harsh as catastrophic effects have been caused. Anthropos have been learning the lesson and then has responded trying to mitigate and adapt in order to control the consequences to a tolerable level. Yet, this has been a continuous struggle and will continue to be so,

As this has happened the human population has increased to an unprecedented level, increasing so the need for the use of material and living vital resources, particularly food. In trying to satisfy this need, man has been making changes in the rest of Planet Earth to the point that the quality of the environment and the very survival of biological species (Bios) are said to be compromised. This is, in my view, the "nitty gritty" of this issue.
If Awareness of a CosmicView is attained by Anthropos, the approach to confront this challenging reality will be more successful. Awareness, in simple terms, is nothing more than having knowledge, and here comes Science.

2 年Getting down to "nitty gritty" is quite a challenge if one is taking a Cosmic View ??. But I basically agree with you. I also think that it is good to take such a view more often. As an engineer, I can only hardly accept your emphasis on "detrimental" (damaging) influences that we, Anthropos, have on Earth and it's Biosphere. This is a defeatist, discouraging vision. While we indeed make mistakes, we also eventually learn from them. This Planet would not have been able to house and feed 8 billion people if we did not. Of course, apart from whether there should be so many of us after all... I am also sceptical about associating nearly all miseries with human activities, which seems to be the trendy way of thinking today. While, for example, there is little doubt about the Climate Change, diverse studies point at the contribution of other than anthropogenic reasons. Technology can also here be part of the solution. If not today then in the future.
