Cosmic Energy through Fasting

In the late 1990s, my parents embarked on a unique fasting journey, following a rigorous routine of three consecutive days of fasting followed by a day's break, all year round. Little did they know, their spiritual dedication would draw the attention of a clairvoyant at the Adhyatm Sadhna Kendra in Delhi.

During his visit, the clairvoyant, without prior knowledge of my father's fasting routine, astoundingly remarked on it. Intrigued, I sought an explanation behind this uncanny observation. The clairvoyant revealed that fasting, especially prolonged fasting, imbues individuals with infinite cosmic energy—an insight that left me pondering the deeper significance of fasting practices.

Within the Jain community, fasting holds a profound spiritual significance, transcending physical health concerns. One such tradition, Varshi Tap or Ekantar Tapa, involves the observance of alternate-day fasting for over a year, honoring the mythological significance of Akshay Tritiya, when Lord Rishabhdev broke his year-long fast.

In the rich tapestry of Jain tradition, I've witnessed countless souls embarking on the rigorous path of asceticism, a practice often dismissed as mundane by many. However, amidst this vast ocean of practitioners, one figure stands out: Shrimati Icharaj Devi Doongarwal of Chhoti Khatu. With an impressive 46 years of unwavering dedication of observing varshi tap, she's about to mark her 47th year of varshi tap tomorrow.

Despite dedicating a significant 46 years to her varshi tap endeavors, she extended her fasting regimen further. Meanwhile the number of fasts observed by her in one go, in addition to varshi tap range from days numbering 61, 51, 45, 44, 42, 41, 31, 25, 41, 51, 34, 33, 32, 21, 17, 14, 13, 11 (twice), 10( twice), 9 (twice), 8 (twice), 5 (15 Times), 4 (25 Times), 3 (125 Times), 2 (250 Times) and much more.

There were multiple instances where she observed fast for 2 to 3 consecutive days but there wasn’t a single instance where she had meals for 2 consecutive days. Her remarkable ability to undertake prolonged fasting with ease speaks volumes about her profound spiritual strength and resilience.

Jain asceticism, however, extends far beyond the physical realm. While medical science may scrutinize its effects solely through the lens of the body, its true essence lies in the purification of the soul and the sanctification of the spirit. In the grand narrative of existence, the body is but a transient vessel, a fleeting manifestation of the eternal soul.
In my own heart, Shrimati Icharaj Devi's unwavering commitment commands profound admiration and respect. She serves as a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the path of asceticism for countless souls within the Jain community and beyond.

While medical science may grapple with the rationale behind such rigorous fasting practices, proponents emphasize the purification of the soul as the ultimate goal. Despite differing perspectives, there is a growing recognition of fasting's benefits, both for physical and spiritual well-being.

The narrative of fasting transcends mere physical abstinence, delving into the realms of spiritual enrichment and cosmic energy. Through ancient traditions and modern revelations, fasting continues to inspire seekers on their quest for inner harmony and enlightenment.
