A cosa serve studiare? | What is the use of study?

Spesso mi ritrovo ad affrontare i temi dell’education e della formazione sottolineando le problematiche derivanti dal mismatch. Mi ha colpito molto questo aneddoto raccontato da Corrado Augias, un’affermazione che trovo diretta e particolarmente esplicativa.

Spero che possa essere di ispirazione per i nostri giovani e le nostre giovani e per tutte quelle persone che stanno affrontando il proprio percorso di crescita.

?Ricordo ancora la domanda che fece il professore di filosofia il primo giorno di liceo: 'A che serve studiare? Chi sa rispondere?".

Qualcuno osò rispostine educate: "a crescer bene", "a diventare brave persone". Niente, scuoteva la testa. Finché disse: "Ad evadere dal carcere".

Ci guardammo stupiti. "L’ignoranza è un carcere. Perché là dentro non capisci e non sai che fare.

In questi cinque anni dobbiamo organizzare la più grande evasione del secolo. Non sarà facile, vi vogliono stupidi, ma se scavalcate il muro dell’ignoranza poi capirete senza dover chiedere aiuto. E sarà difficile ingannarvi. Chi ci sta?".

Mi è tornato in mente quell’episodio indelebile leggendo che solo un ragazzo su venti capisce un testo. E penso agli altri diciannove, che faticano ad evadere e rischiano l’ergastolo dell’ignoranza.

Uno Stato democratico deve salvarli perché è giusto. E perché il rischio poi è immenso: le menti deboli chiedono l’uomo forte?. [Corrado Augias]

I often post on LinkedIn about education and professional development , highlighting the difficulties that arise from the dichotomy of these two things. I was impressed by this short speech by the Italian journalist and writer Corrado Augias. I hope that it will be an inspiration for all young people and for those who are exploring their own growth path.

“I still remember the philosophy professor's question from the first day of high school: ‘What is the use of study? Who can answer?”

Someone answered politely: “to grow well,” “to be a good person.” Nothing, he shook his head. Until he said: “to escape from prison.”

We looked at each other in surprise. “Ignorance is a prison,” he added, “because inside a prison, you don’t understand, and you don’t know what to do.”

In the next five years, we need to plan for the biggest prison break of the century. It won’t be easy as they want you to be stupid. But if you climb over the wall of ignorance, you will be able to understand without asking for help. It will be much more difficult to deceive you. “Who is in?”

I had the chance to remember this unforgettable episode while reading recently that only one young person out of 20 can understand a text. I think about the other 19 who struggle to escape and risk the life sentence of ignorance.
