Orthognathic surgery is a procedure by which various jaw anomalies can be corrected. Problems in speaking, biting, chewing, swallowing and breathing, unwanted stress on the jaw joint (TMJ) and facial muscles can be caused by Disproportionate jaws.Asymmetry in jaw structures also affects facial appearance. The overgrowth of the lower jaw (mandible) causes a “long face” thereby affecting the facial appearance.
Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy is a procedure done to surgically reduce excess bone in the lower jaw and create more balanced facial features. Results are immediate and there is no scarring as the procedure is done from inside the mouth. Self-confidence gets boosted when the appearance is enhanced. Youngsters who undergo a lot of psychological stress over their facial appearance can be successfully relieved from their worries after these procedures. Orthognathic surgeries are done on a regular basis in Richardson’s dental and craniofacial hospital, Nagercoil, Tamilnadu, India.
