The Correct Method for Sampling and Acceptance of Unshaped Refractory Materials

The Correct Method for Sampling and Acceptance of Unshaped Refractory Materials

The following aspects need to be paid attention to when sampling and accepting unshaped refractory materials: representativeness of sampling, suitability of packaging, storage and transportation conditions, and rationality of molding and maintenance conditions.

01 Sampling

The test results of samples are usually used to decide whether to accept a batch of materials. In order to ensure the representativeness of the samples taken, before sampling, relevant parties should reach an agreement on the sampling inspection plan based on the type of material, contract quantity, batch size, delivery method, packaging, storage and transportation method, etc.

1. 1 Basic principles

(1) Sampling and sample preparation must be carried out under the supervision of experienced technical personnel;

(2) Sampling is best done during the dynamic process of the material, such as during loading, unloading or packaging;

(3) For certain unshaped refractory materials (such as refractory castables) delivered in bags, admixtures, cement, etc. should also be sampled separately according to the prescribed proportions;

(4) The equipment, tools, and sample containers used for sampling must be kept clean, strong and durable, and containers containing liquid samples must be sealed and made of non-hygroscopic materials;

(5) During the sampling, division, preparation and storage of samples, be careful not to change the test performance of the material in its delivery state to prevent any changes in the properties to be measured;

(6) If one sample is used for several measurements, the test results must not be affected by consecutive tests.

1. 2 Operation steps

(1) Confirm the product attributes, quantity, transportation conditions, etc. of the accepted materials.

(2) Confirm the packaging unit and clarify the unit weight and total packaging quantity of the packaging unit.

(3) Determine the number of samples to form a batch sample.

(4) Mix refractory materials before sampling.

02Packaging, storage and transportation

There are many types of unshaped refractory materials, which may deteriorate during the period from production, sampling to testing. Storage samples cannot exceed the shelf life.

03 Molding and curing conditions

There are varieties of unshaped materials with different molding and curing conditions. The molding conditions should specify the following: ratio, binder (including water), additive amount, molding method, maintenance conditions, etc.

Before accepting unshaped refractory materials, you should have a full understanding of the characteristics of the product. Develop a detailed sampling plan based on its characteristics and acceptance items, clarify the molding methods and conditions, and conduct molding and testing strictly according to the conditions. If you choose a third-party laboratory for inspection, you should also select the laboratory to ensure that the acceptance is reasonable and effective.
