Corporate Wellness Audit - Making you and your people ‘Fit for the Future’

Corporate Wellness Audit - Making you and your people ‘Fit for the Future’

In the early 2000s, I was involved in the development of the LMA’s 'Fit To Manage' initiative in response to the lack of focus on the health of football managers during that period.

The programme, 'Fit to Manage', was designed to place emphasis on Lifestyle Assessment, Risk Profiling, and Stress Factors. Managers are subjected to various tests including blood pressure, body composition, flexibility, heart and lung capacity, and stress management skills. Given that stress impacts individuals differently, the primary objective is to raise awareness and assist them in addressing stress in their lives.

Managers are regularly monitored, evaluated at the Wellness Centre every six months, and provided with an annual debriefing. The main aim is to detect and prevent any potential health issues at an early stage.

This approach is not only relevant to the sports industry but also to the corporate sector. Similar to successful football managers, numerous corporate professionals are highly driven, ambitious, and tend to overlook their own well-being due to work commitments. It is imperative for individuals to prioritise self-care alongside their professional duties.

In reality, these 'Corporate Athletes' possess many similar qualities to league managers. They experience late nights, endure long drives, have irregular dietary habits, lack sufficient time, and may carry excess weight.?

Another notable example is evident in the case of a Wellness program I implemented for a British Superbike team during the mid-2010s. We discovered that the riders were incredibly fit and adept at handling the pressures, as everything revolved around them. However, when it came to the team and Race Weekend, the Pit Crew's heart rates and blood pressure were off the charts according to our measurements.

I strongly believe that regardless of the field, whether it be sports or business, organisations should prioritise the well-being of their assets. Essentially, they should strive to make them 'Fit For The Future'. This is precisely why I developed and currently offer the 'Corporate Wellness Audit' to both businesses and individuals.

Based on the ‘Fit To Manage’ model an example of the Audit programme is as follows:

Interviews -? with the CEO of the Company, the Director of HR, The Executive Leadership team, Key Line Managers and at least 2 Focus groups (the latter normally contains 8-10 people randomly selected from the work force). Each of these above are interviewed for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours using a series of questions directed at understanding their approach and needs relating to health and wellbeing.

Profiling - In addition to this a health and wellbeing behavioural Profile is administered with a key focus on the clients “Readiness to Change” focusing on the following areas:?

  • Stress & Resilience - Emotions & Happiness
  • Work Life Balance - Sleep - Exercise
  • Relaxation/Winding Down - Diet
  • Smoking - Alcohol - Hydration?
  • Heart Disease & Lifestyle Risk Factors

Lifestyle & Ageing - The Readiness to Change Profiling helps to identify the key needs within the client’s health and wellbeing and determines how active they are in currently meeting those needs.

The Outputs - Following this process a comprehensive report is produced including guidelines and recommendations for implementing/improving a health & wellbeing strategy within the business or organisation.?

A series of workshops and presentations will also be delivered and centred upon corporate wellbeing with a focus on key elements that include; the ageing brain, stress & resilience, risk factors for heart disease, cancer and diabetes, exercise, nutrition, sleep, travel and developing a positive culture for corporate health.?

I will then reference key examples of best practice which will be shared from successfully implemented programmes and their outputs and a follow up programme can then be arranged and implemented.

Working on the adage of ‘Prevention is better than cure’ the Audit has been delivered to a wide range of corporate clients who have since assimilated The ‘Corporate Athlete’ mantra and have improved performance, attendance and mindfulness across the board.

If you would like to know more about the programme or any of the other areas I could offer you added value then please get in touch today.

Stay well
