One fine day, an employee walked into his manager's office and expressed his desire to resign, asking for a short notice period. The manager, taken aback by the sudden request, inquired about the reason behind it. The employee recounted numerous incidents that had been transpiring in the office lately. He pointed out the people who gossiped instead of working, the toxic culture that pervaded among his peers, and the experiences that demotivated him to continue working in the same environment.
Listening to his grievances patiently, the manager made a request of the employee. He asked him to carry a brimming glass of water and walk around the entire office thrice without spilling a single drop of water. The employee, assuming it to be a trivial task, obliged the manager's request, thinking that it would be an effortless way to convince him to accept his resignation. With the glass filled to the brim, he began walking around the office, taking slow and steady steps, ensuring not to spill the water.
As he walked with the glass in his hand, he suddenly began to realize something peculiar. He was so focused on the task at hand that he hadn't noticed any of the incidents he had complained about earlier. He couldn't recall a single instance where he had observed his colleagues gossiping or any negative behavior. His complete attention was on the glass of water he held, making sure not a single drop spilled from it.
Upon completing the task, the employee returned to the manager's office with a smile on his face. The manager then asked him to recount how many of the incidents he had pointed out earlier had taken place while he was carrying the glass. To the employee's surprise, he couldn't recall any of them. The manager, with a smile on his face, then explained that when one is focused on their work, they have no time to worry about the toxic things happening around them.
