Corporate Politics and story goes on…

So what’s your call? Does it sound familiar? Does it ring a bell back of your head? Is there any impact on you? What should one do in such situation? Is there anything called corporate politics and dirty corporate politics? Why does it matter so much? What’s the gain? Who are the winners? Is it a game?.....

And questions can go on and on. When a fresher joins a company, s/he come with loads of expectations, eyes full of dreams, ideas flooded around, team work they look up to and of course with that there are some hesitations, some confusions about how the company will receive him/her, how will it turn out. Hello, this is a BIG day after all. It’s completely OK to be nervous. Remember the first day of school, on the second thought, that’s too much to ask. Ok, let’s do a fast forward and go back to our first day of college, isn’t it the same feeling? Do you see that new building with big classrooms, large field where students are playing outdoor games, or the canteen where not so healthy food is being served or the Teacher’s lounge or long corridors where students are chatting…….. Memory lanes with so many good things were happening around you. And suddenly, there is a crash in your thought process, and you started feeling like an ant in front of elephant, you want to get out of their way, however those larger than life bodies are blocking your roads and making it impossible for you to cross the road without hardens. Yes, I am talking about being bullied at college. There were always a group of students who wanted to break the rules, who wanted go against the tide (in the bad way), who wanted to make others life miserable, they wanted to prove their ego, their power by doing all the bad things. It was in college right, still it was there. And your parents were not there to save you, maybe some of your friends were there, who might be also afraid of the situation, somehow together you guys managed to pull that things off. Or maybe you did it completely alone.

Isn’t same things are happening in corporate world? We all know that proverb, that life is not bed of roses, right? One might say, college and corporate life can’t be comparable. As per my experience, it can. We can find lots of similarity if we compare these two stages of our life. In both cases, it was unknown and unexpected. In college if one has managed to get out of that situation or help somebody to get out of that situation, then look back and try to analyze what did you actually do and how did you do that. Try to find out the root cause of your feelings, what made you nervous, how was the environment like, what steps (in corporate I would use strategies) you had used to kick off those guys and became the person you became. At some point, you made the choice, what was that turning point, what triggered you to take that step. There was something you did differently that’s why you got the different result.

And office space is not different from that space as well. Yes, there is a new environment with loads of new elements, basic is same though. The tendency of greediness is there, playing foul is there. Question is, do you want to fall on their trap or do you want to keep your calm, keep your head high with all the values which have been cascaded down to you from your parents/family/teachers? Off course, you will also play your game, but it will be a different ball game from your level. You will play fair with the full confidence; you will map your strategies which will benefit not only you but also your company.

And trust me, it’s not easy. The whole process will make you confident, your team work will improve, you will be flexible at any given situation, your decision making skills, people management skills will have a positive curve , your positive outlook will make a difference , you can be that hiPo, you will create followers, you will become the role model and list can go on and on

Again this is the choice you will make, which path you want to take. Do you want the short term success or do you want to see the bigger picture with long term effect. Corporate politics will be there and by choosing the right strategy we can get the truthful outcome. Be the Winner of a healthy competition. Be honest to yourself, because mirror doesn’t lies. Both the Path is open, choose your Path wisely.

To progress faster in corporate career, it might be better to change companies whenever one gets a chance to work out bigger challenges, rather than remaining stuck in politics of one organisation. It takes a long time to work out ones way through the politics of one organization. Its always an optimization between time, learning and the effort required to work out against the strength of politics that one is working up for.
