If you are an employee who have worked for multiple corporate, you must be aware of many reward & recognition schemes in the corporate world that exists to recognize the talent. These awards recognize people across categories such as emerging talent, Rising star, Consistent Performer, Award of Excellence, Kudos, Loyalty award and the list goes on and on.
More than fancy names are being devised to name such schemes and create a value preposition, pride in possession and a sense of recognition. Further promoting the award ceremony event as an Oscar of the corporate world, may be in a town hall, an offsite or a team event does the magic (Ego therapy). Well, this genuinely gives the needed recognition! But…?
have you ever felt that its already too late for it to come?
ever wondered, Did you even deserved it?
Or realize that someone more deserving was left out?
If you think it’s been given to you because your manager thinks you deserve it, you are seriously mistaken!
If you think you’ve really really worked hard, and the management recognizes it, you are nearly there.
But if you think that you worked hard, and you cried and made chaos in front of management to recognize efforts, especially in terms of profile and compensation, BINGO ! …you are eligible for being nominated for the award and the chances of winning depends on with what big & loud throat have you cried.
As a popular quote goes,
until the baby cries, the mother doesn’t feed
The same is an approach, being applied everywhere, and is a practical thought. The corporate world is a fancy, sweet coated, deceptive platform where skills are being traded for the price at offer, favorable circumstances and power of negotiation can change the rules of the game. So, in my opinion, its only the hard-working professionals (learn to be a #smartass) who are sick and tired of working shit hard for consecutive years, when reaches out to management asking for revision of compensation and profile (promotion), receives the best LOLLYPOP that can be offed to control the situation (de-motivation, attrition, impact on quality, team bonding, impact on business etc), an award. As there are multiple categories the best suited award is being offered from the lot which compliment the circumstances the most (in some cases you receive paper that can be traded for goods in some cases it’s just a paper).
I would not blame the management, because this is the best which could be offered immediately, at the moment of crisis and when the appraisal cycle turns up, the bell curve rings the bell, given everyone is crying then.
while on the other side, there are few who grows well, in no time, get promoted every year, gain healthy compensation, were your colleagues in the past and are now your managers, you think they don’t work but your management sees them as an organization asset and you are of the opinion that management is biased, the person is A##licker, blah blah blah. All we need is to be little more smart, look at things from various perspectives, understand the priorities of the management and be in sight ALWAYS… by the way, smart ones also gets the award.
