Is coronavirus causing U.S. death rate to fall?

If I was an editor or reporter at a big media company in NY or DC, I'd investigate the following data issued on the CDC website yesterday:

The number of deaths from coronavirus doubled from 300 in the week ended March 21 to 788 in the week ended March 28.

However, the overall number of U.S. deaths in the week ended March 28 was 28,498 -- or 50% of the amount recorded in the same period a year ago, according to the CDC.

Isn't that weird? Maybe its a lapse in hospitals recording data. Or maybe by hunkering down in our homes, we are reducing the normal death rate. Note that number of deaths nationwide from pneumonia has fallen about a third in the past eight weeks.

To my friends in the national media, can you send me any links or articles about this anomaly?

Peter-That is an unusual decrease. Accidents (of all kinds, including motor vehicles) are the third leading cause of death in the US. The majority of these lethal accidents are vehicle related so it’s likely that they have decreased because we are driving less
