Corona Alert: Emotional Care during this testing time

In just weeks, the Coronavirus pandemic has shaved off nearly a third of the global market cap. Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has halved the global gross domestic product (GDP) growth projection for 2020 due to Coronavirus. “The current situation will impact most economic activities like traveling, consumption, etc. Manufacturing will be impacted due to supply chain disruptions and this in turn will delay capacity additions and capex spending,” (source EconomicTimes.com)
It's a worrisome and tense situation for many sectors across the world. Extremely overwhelming for business owners, entrepreneurs, and workforce from travel, food, entertainment, manufacturing, ex-im, retailers and other sectors.
Although very scary healthwise and vividly financial in nature, it is also going to be an emotional upheaval for those facing challenges. As an emotional intelligence advocate, here are some points in my view to help you during this testing time.
- Keep anxiety in check: As human beings anxiety is the first thing that we observe in our body. Whether it’s stock market news or rising numbers of affected persons, it’s going to cause you anxiety. Make sure you watch some good news daily. News channels are flooded with anxious news. Make sure you see updates from patients who have recovered, some great initiatives taken by people and otherwise positive happenings from around the world.
- Do not lose temper: It’s a declared pandemic. Nothing is more important than saving yourself and other people right now. Whether it’s about granting leaves to employees not feeling well or work from home permission, a delivery that’s canceled or an urgent trip postponed. Do not lose temper on people or yourself. Not only it would make you look bad, but it would also cause you much distress if something happens to those around you.
- Take one day at a time: For people suffering financial losses, it’s extremely difficult to stay cool. Future anticipation will make things look grim right now. One the scare of health and second scare of losing wealth. Just think, for some, it might be a battle of survival. The hawkers, the corona affected, small restaurants, daily wagers are just some examples. Thank the almighty for living healthy one more day. You can build or gain back anything as long as you are hail and hearty.
- Frustrations don’t solve anything: Do not be frustrated when things don’t work out the way you want. You may not like working from home or it’s not even an option for you. It’s easier to blame others in such a situation. Don’t take it out on family, kids or employees. Relax, meditate, play indoor or spend a good time with family to rejuvenate.
- Help those in need: Take appropriate measures to protect yourself and others, stay hopeful and have faith. If you know someone who is affected, help them as much as you can without physical contact. A call or message is really nice to morally support them. If they need something which you can send via a caregiver or leave to someone. Don’t hesitate. Just do it!
Mental and Emotional balance at this time is extremely important for everyone. Keep up your spirits and take a pause. After all, life is to be lived each moment.
Take care!
