Corner office vs. communal space

Corner office vs. communal space

The corner office has long been coveted real estate in the workplace. It affords privacy, often features a window and sends a clear message about status. When you hold the keys to the corner office, you've made it to the top. I always envisioned this when I was a child and I finally got it.

So why did I turn in my keys to my private office and choose instead to work in more-open and communal space? Let me explain.

I have learned the importance of stationing myself in the middle of my team. I think that it's a lot of fun to work like this. I have the same workspace, desk and computer as everyone else. Yes, I may be their supervisor, but this sends the message that I'm no better than them.

My team feels they can easily approach me in the open space than if they had to cross the threshold of an office or make an appointment to see me. These interactions yield casual conversations and facilitate great idea sharing.

There’s a tactical advantage, too. By sitting among my direct reports: I hear about any issues going on and how they come together to resolve them, I learn about their personal lives (yes, it is important to learn about their personal lives… they do have lives outside of work), I am able to effectively mange any unplanned things that pop up throughout the work day.

I have found this approach to be very beneficial. This is the new way of working and interacting with your team. Sit. Listen. Learn. Manage. Be present.
