On Thursday, September 26th, the Cork City Council Chamber buzzed with excitement as it hosted the annual Cork Learning Neighbourhoods Recognition event as part of Learning Cities Day. This annual occasion brings together representatives from Cork's diverse Learning Neighbourhoods, affiliated with Adult Continuing Education (ACE) at University College Cork (UCC), to celebrate their collective achievements in fostering lifelong learning and community engagement through various educational initiatives.
Earlier in the day, the Learning Neighbourhoods Workshop took place at Nano Nagle Place. This workshop, attended by Norma Browne the ACE at UCC Learning Neighbourhood Coordinator, provided a unique platform to share and exchange experiences across Learning Neighbourhoods with representatives from Irish Learning Cities. Attendees gained valuable insights into the innovative community-led learning initiatives that have been fostering educational growth and social inclusion within Cork's neighbourhoods. Discussions centered around the collaborative strategies employed to engage local residents, promote lifelong learning, and enhance community resilience. The event highlighted how learning neighbourhoods are helping build stronger, more connected communities, serving as a model for other Irish cities to adopt similar approaches.
The Learning Neighbourhoods Programme, which began as a pilot initiative in 2015-2016, focuses on building a culture of lifelong learning across Cork City. The Programme Steering Group, comprising Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí , UCC, MTU Extended Campus and Cork Education and Training Board (ETB), collaborates with local learning organisations and residents to promote and develop active local lifelong learning.
Throughout the recognition event, attendees showcased the significant impact of their learning projects, demonstrating how education can strengthen local ties and empower communities. The atmosphere was filled with stories of collaboration and innovation, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in educational efforts across Cork.
