The Core Wounds of Humanity in the Workplace: Rejection, Betrayal, and Abandonment

At the core of human experience, three deep emotional wounds shape much of our behavior: rejection, betrayal, and abandonment. These wounds don’t stay confined to our personal lives—they follow us into the workplace, often influencing how we lead, manage, and interact with others. If left unaddressed, these shadows can foster disengagement, dissatisfaction, and even create toxic work cultures that stifle innovation and creativity.

Rejection: The Fear of Not Being Enough

Many leaders unconsciously fear rejection, leading them to become overly critical or micromanaging, creating environments where employees feel inadequate or devalued. This can manifest in leaders dismissing ideas without proper consideration, prioritizing control over collaboration, and making others feel excluded or unworthy of contributing fully.

When employees feel rejected, they become disengaged, reluctant to bring new ideas to the table, and hesitant to take risks. To combat this, managers must foster a culture of inclusion by actively welcoming diverse perspectives and encouraging everyone to contribute, regardless of rank or background. Leaders should practice open-mindedness and curiosity, allowing intuition and creativity to guide their teams toward innovation.

Betrayal: The Breach of Trust

Betrayal in the workplace occurs when employees feel that promises are broken or leaders act without integrity. Whether it’s a lack of follow-through on commitments, favoritism, or unethical behavior, betrayal erodes trust and leads to a disconnect between leadership and employees. When trust is broken, it becomes challenging to build strong, collaborative relationships, resulting in disengaged teams that are hesitant to fully invest in their work or company mission.

Leaders must cultivate trust through transparency and consistency. By being accountable to their word and supporting their teams authentically, they build a culture where employees feel safe to be vulnerable and creative. Encouraging diverse perspectives helps build bridges of trust, as it demonstrates a commitment to fairness and innovation.

Abandonment: The Fear of Being Left Behind

Abandonment is experienced when employees feel unsupported, isolated, or neglected by their leaders. A manager who is disengaged, absent, or fails to provide guidance can leave employees feeling lost and disconnected. This shadow plays out in leaders who are unavailable or who refuse to empower their teams, making employees feel as though they must fend for themselves without the necessary support or resources.

To address this, leaders need to remain present and involved, offering mentorship and fostering collaboration. A workplace that values diversity of thought and empathy creates a nurturing environment where employees feel seen, valued, and supported, which encourages engagement and loyalty.

Healing through Diversity, Intuition, and Imagination

Addressing these core wounds requires conscious leadership—leaders who are willing to acknowledge the shadows within themselves and their organizations. Embracing diversity is key. A diverse workforce brings multiple perspectives, enabling organizations to challenge old biases and unlock fresh, creative ideas. When leaders adopt an unbiased approach, they foster a culture of openness where employees feel safe to express their unique insights and talents.

Furthermore, leadership driven by intuition and imagination inspires innovation. When leaders trust their instincts and encourage creative thinking, they pave the way for their teams to break free from the limitations of fear-based thinking—be it fear of rejection, betrayal, or abandonment. In doing so, they create an empowered, forward-thinking culture where everyone has the potential to thrive.

The Way Forward

Rejection, betrayal, and abandonment are wounds that have the potential to damage workplace culture and undermine leadership. However, with a conscious, open-hearted approach that values diversity, creativity, and trust, these shadows can be transformed. Leaders who confront these wounds head-on will create environments that foster engagement, satisfaction, and a strong sense of belonging—allowing their teams to not only overcome the past but build a future full of possibility.
