Copywriting tip #18: Try feeling instead of thinking.
Feeling instead of thinking is a great technique to use when the wheels are turning and nothing original is coming out.
It's especially useful when you're asking yourself, “what’s another word for x?” or “what’s another way of saying x?”. Instead of thinking for the answer or finding an obvious one on thesaurus.com, get out of your head and into your body. Try feeling for the answer.
Instead of asking “what’s another word for speed?” ask yourself “when I really try on the feeling of speed, what images or memories come up?”
If you’re dead inside and don’t have any feelings, use google images instead of thesaurus.com. Search comfort and see what images come up. You’ll see images of comfy socks and fireplaces. You’ll see a morning coffee and a book, a home cooked lasagna, a hug from a friend, or cuddles with pets. All of these images would inspire more interesting writing than another word on thesaurus.com.
The beauty of feeling instead of thinking is that whatever you come up with, it will be more emotional than logical, and whether you're writing an ad for a hot dog or selling a couch on craigslist, that’s the key to sellin’ shit.

4 年Great advice. A supplement: Try your first and strongest feeling first, then investigate others that come up. (I've never found a thesaurus to be of any use, online or print versions.)
I'm feelin' this. I find that the thesaurus often just shows me a bunch of words that are even less conversational than the one I'm trying to replace.
