Copywriters Don't Just Turn Out 'Pretty Words'

I recently heard a “marketing guru” talking about how you shouldn’t hire a “copywriter” to create your website copy or sales page, because all we do is turn out “pretty words.”

Ummmmm...

This happens more than you might think, actually.

A lot of what I read on Facebook lately says that you EITHER need to hire an expensive marketing agency to write your copy OR that “anyone” can write their website copy in 3 hours flat by buying a $37 template (even if you have zero exerience in writing.)

For the record, I also see FB ads telling people who have zero experience writing that they can start their own business offering this brand-new service, right now, and make bleep-tons of money.

So my opinion (as a conversion copywriting entrepreneur and a pro writer for more than 15 years) is that this advice is either misguided or just flat-out wrong on multiple levels. (Those levels being practically speaking, and just plain old common sense-speaking ... which apparently isn't so common anymore) …

... and which made me feel like throwing cold water on my laptop.

Anyway, this marketing guru posited that “copywriters” are definitely also NOT marketers (yes, I am) and her advice was to try writing your website copy YOURSELF using her $49 system. (Kind of like how my hairstylist tells me to cut my waist-length hair myself and treat it with keratin. NOT.)

This kind of business advice really irks me.

If you’re not an auto mechanic (and don’t know what’s under your Accord’s hood), do you try to fix your car yourself using YouTube videos?

If you’re sick, do you try to self-diagnose using Dr. Google, and then prescribe your own course of treatment?

Just saying … you would go to an auto mechanic or a doctor, but when it comes to “writing copy,” the advice is often “do it yourself using my $37 template.”

Seriously, I'm sure you've seen some of these Facebook ads … or bought some of the programs.

In fact, I’ve bought the programs to see what they’re all about ($27 and $37 for business research).

Here’s the thing … with these systems, you STILL need to gather marketing data, generate the marketing messages and actually WRITE the copy.

... I mean, honestly, who would want to write their website copy WITHOUT knowing the proven converting formulas and frameworks first? (The frameworks I've paid THOUSANDS of dollars to learn from the copywriting greats and spent countless hours implementing.)
