The Copywriter Who Called Me Out

The Copywriter Who Called Me Out

Nine years ago I attended an in-person mastermind with some truly brilliant marketers and copywriters and I was in the very early stages of figuring out my business.?

On the 2nd day it was my turn for a hot seat and I got up in front of the room and shared my idea for a consulting business teaching people how to network and connect with the people they always wanted to meet.?

Everybody in the room started asking questions but there was one seasoned copywriter who crossed his arms looked me dead in the eyes and said:?

"You say you can teach us how to meet famous people. Who is the most famous person YOU know?"?

The words caught in my throat and my mouth went dry because when I thought about it...

I didn't really have a good answer.?

I had definitely met some influential people, but I didn't really know anyone with name recognition, so I meekly shared that I knew the sibling of a well-known celebrity at the time and a producer of a Hollywood film.?

It was at that moment I realized something very important about positioning:?

Positioning is not about how you choose to position yourself, it's about how others actually SEE you.?

You can come up with any idea to position yourself that you want, but if others don't see it, then it doesn't work.?

I couldn't sell "I'll help you meet famous people" because I hadn't done it myself.?

What I did do though was get into rooms other people wanted to be in and I could sell that and tell stories about that.?

But I never would have realized that had it not been for that copywriter.?

Understanding how others see you is one of the most powerful pieces of information you can gain and once you understand it, positioning becomes easy.?

And that's one of the many things I'll be addressing in a new experiment I'm running called Triple Threats.?

I'll be creating a container to explore exactly how you're perceived and help you understand your own positioning.?

Who knows, you might even encounter a truth-telling copywriter who will call you on your BS.?

But only if you let me know you're interested.?

More on how to do that in the P.S.?

Excelsior!?

P.S. Want an invite to Triple Threats? DM me the words "Triple Threat" and I'll get you the info. Last time I did this, the DM's blew up so thanks for you patience with my reply.

Great story Michael Roderick! Positioning is all about how others perceive you, not just how you present yourself. That’s such an important lesson for growth!

Getting called out on our SME status is a huge wake up call at times - to me, it is the ultimate "fact check" in life. Which leads to the perception and subsequent proper positioning when accepted like you did. Good lesson, indeed, Michael Roderick

perception (can) be reality for so many. but I personally think - being real - that is a vibe - and nothing beats that magnetism

As they say, perception is reality. It's amazing how so many people have no idea what their reputation is or how others see them. It isn't good to be paranoid about it necessarily, but certainly aware!
