Copyright infringement

Copyright infringement is when someone uses a copyrighted work without the copyright owner's permission. This can include:

  • Making copies of a copyrighted work for sale or hire
  • Distributing infringing copies for personal or trade gain
  • Performing copyrighted work in public
  • Downloading movies from an unauthorized source
  • Using a television serial clip in a YouTube video without giving credit?

Copyright infringement can apply to many types of creative works, such as books, songs, and paintings, but can also extend to architecture, clothing, and websites.?

In some cases, copyright infringement can result in criminal penalties, including up to five years in prison. A court can also order the seizure of infringing materials, and plaintiffs can seek monetary compensation.
