Copying a standard security role in Dataverse

The other day someone told me that the standard security roles for use of the marketing app in Dataverse could not be copied. This engaged me, because copying standard security roles is a well-known best practice if you need to customize roles to fit you needs.

I doublechecked it and in fact, the security role could not be copied from the window.

Then I remembered that security roles can be copied from the view as well. And that still works like a charm.

Still, it’s strange that a security role can be copied from a view, but not from a window. So, I doublechecked this in the Power Platform admin center. There, you are able to copy the role from both view and window. You’re notified that the privileges cannot be adjusted due to its non-customizable nature, but the copy button is not greyed out and works fine.

In the admin center you can also search for security roles as well as privileges inside the roles. I recommend using this tool instead of the legacy one.

I hope this will save you time when you encounter it yourself and that you don’t have to create a new security role from scratch.
