Copy of Which Car is the World’s Fastest?
There are lots of records that engineers set out to break when they begin production on a new vehicle; best fuel efficiency, most storage space, and most safe are among the most valuable accolades to pursue. However, when it comes to super- and hypercars, the most coveted world record is fastest production car. Manufacturers across the globe are always hard at work trying to one-up the latest title holder, creating a competitive ecosystem where limits previously thought to be unreachable are constantly surpassed. When the Ferrari F40 released in 1986 and became the first production car to break 200 mph, the world was in awe of its power. These days, there’s a handful of cars that can break 300 mph while flat out. Let’s take a look at some of the cars in the 300 club (including the current world’s fastest) and see which upcoming models seem most likely to steal its crown in the near future.
Let’s not keep our readers in suspense any longer! The current fastest production car in the world is the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, which while flat out can reach speeds of up to 330 mph. That’s not the least of the impressive numbers attached to this car; its 0-60 speed is around 2.5 seconds, it produces around 1,600 horsepower, and it costs a mind-boggling $3 million to own.
Owners of the Jesko Absolut (of which there are only 125 at the moment) not only have access to one of the fastest objects to ever touch asphalt, but one of the most incredibly engineered machines of our time. Its extensively aerodynamic bodywork is as good to look at as it is impressive, and its outside and inside are joined together perfectly with its 9-speed gearbox that is capable of almost imperceptibly fast shifts. Powerful brakes are also a necessity for any speed title contender, and the Jesko’s discs deliver, taking the car from around 250 mph to a complete stop in less than 9 seconds. Any one of these statistics are mind-boggling on their own, and the Koenigsegg is remarkable for having combined so much in one stylish package.
If Koenigsegg isn’t your brand of choice, there are still a few cars in the same speed neighborhood worth looking into. Bugatti is a company famous for having multiple speed-record-breaking cars in its roster. Their legacy began with the 2005 Veyron, which became world-famous with its 253 mph benchmark. When Veyron production ceased in 2015, Bugatti followed up immediately with the Chiron, whose Super Sport 300+ model was the first ever production car capable of reaching 300 mph.? Other notable 300 club members include the Hennessey Venom F5–capable of around 311 mph max–and the SSC Tuatara, which claims to top the Jesko Absolut at 331 mph but has only been observed to reach 283 so far.
Since all of these cars require miles of asphalt and gallons of gas to reach their top speed, the world’s fastest vehicles may not remain petrol-powered forever. Electric vehicles may lack the sound, fury, and smells of their traditional counterparts, but the promise of blistering acceleration and the total lack of emissions contribution may at least provide speed demons a step in a different direction. Most of the 300 club manufacturers keep their projects under wraps until right before they release, but we already have some info on an EV that may be 2025’s first attempt to claim the title: the Tesla Roadster. At the time of writing, the still-unreleased concept unveiled in 2017 promises a 1.9 second 0-60 time, a 620-mile range on a single charge, and a yet-unspecified world-record-setting top speed. It’s nearing a decade since the announcement and a lot of these details sound too good to be true, but the car will undeniably turn heads in the way it intends to if its claimed top speed is accurate.

Until then, we intend to keep honoring the Jesko Absolut for the amazing vehicle that it is. The engineers at Koenigsegg definitely have their work cut out for them if they intend to top their own record and continue to lead the field in speed, but they have some pretty solid laurels to rest on for now. When a successor does release, we’d love nothing more than to see a drag race between the old guard and the new blood; that is, if their owners allow their $3 million+ toys to get up close and personal!
