In a nearby land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome (be victorious).

Tafseer (Explanation)

Background of the Prophecy: This verse refers to the defeat of the Roman Empire by the Persian Empire in the early 7th century, a historical event witnessed by the world. At the time, it seemed improbable for the Romans to recover. Yet, the Quran foretold their victory within a few years. The Arabic term "???" (bidh') specifies a period ranging between three to nine years.

Historical Context and Fulfillment: Initially, the pagans of Makkah mocked the Muslims, as they identified with the Persians, who were also idol worshippers. The Muslims sympathized with the monotheistic Romans. Against all odds, the Romans achieved victory within the prophesied timeframe, proving the truth of the Quran.
