SQL Insights: In Conversation With Ignacio Spreafico
The SQL Skills Assessment from LearnSQL.com doesn’t just test your knowledge; it immerses you in practical scenarios to gauge your SQL expertise across several crucial areas. It's an ideal platform for those looking to demonstrate their abilities in data manipulation and analysis using SQL.
Today, we sat down with Ignacio Spreafico , an aspiring Data Scientist who excelled in our SQL Assessment and achieved a Certificate of Competency in SQL. We’ll explore his experience, uncover valuable insights, and learn about his journey in the world of data science.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your journey towards becoming a data scientist.
Hey, I’m Ignacio, but everyone calls me Nacho. My journey in data began almost 4 years ago when I got into the FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) world by being hired as a Demand Planner. Although forecasting was my role’s main purpose, most of my time was spent extracting, cleaning, and presenting data using various tools (mainly Excel, Power BI, and Microsoft SQL Server). During that time, the itch to dig deeper into data and the story hidden in it appeared.
How long have you been working with SQL, and what are its main uses in your data projects?
Before my experience in the aforementioned role, my exposure to SQL was low to null. I’ve heard about it, but never imagined I’d use it. Now, I have been querying databases weekly for at least 3 years. And, although my main flavor is Microsoft SQL Server, I try to practice the syntax and keywords from other engines.
Data science is a rapidly evolving field. Which skills or knowledge areas are you particularly focused on developing further?
Nowadays, I am enrolled in a Python bootcamp with data science and machine learning applications. Specifically, it is about numpy, pandas, matplotlib, seaborn and tensor flow. Also, I would like to get deeper into Big Data and Cloud services.
What motivated you to take the SQL Assessment?
I wanted to challenge myself and have a more accurate picture of where my understanding of the language was.

What strategies did you use to prepare for and successfully complete the SQL Assessment to earn your Certificate of Competency in SQL?
I didn’t do any specific preparation; however, I frequently practiced SQL online to maintain my skills. But I mainly went with what I already knew of it. I wanted to see where my understanding was at that point.
Which parts of the SQL Assessment did you find most challenging, and why?
The last part is about Common Table Expressions (CTEs). I know I am confident in other areas of SQL, but I am still green in CTEs.
What advice would you give to those who are aspiring to enter the field of data science or are considering a transition into this area?
As with anything in life, it is necessary that you really want it. Knowing what you want will keep you on track. After that, and again, as with anything in life, it will be difficult and will take time. Take it one day at a time, don’t rush through the process.
Considering the growing demand for data-related skills, what do you think will provide candidates with a competitive edge in the job market in 2024?
I believe that the most important skill is being a great team player. Technical skills can be taught and learned. Performing well on a team is another matter. So hone your soft skills, there are no one-man or one-woman teams.
Thank you for sharing your insights with us.
