This week, there was some exciting news regarding modern treaties, firsts for Indigenous leaders in Ontario, and APTN's creation of a new Indigenous Languages channel.
Indigenous and Allies are all welcome!
Let's get to it.
??Hero of the Week: Autumn Peltier
This week's hero is Autumn Peltier ! Autumn is an Anishinaabe Indigenous rights and water-rights advocate from Wiikwemkoong First Nation. She was named Chief Water Commissioner for the Anishinabek Nation in 2019.
“I’m going to be an ancestor one day,” says Peltier, from her home in Wikwemikong First Nation in northern Ontario. “I’m still going to have great-grandchildren on this land and I hope they are still able to drink the water.”
Autumn is currently 19 years old, with the experience, knowledge, and wisdom of someone with many more years. I, for one, will be excited and proud to watch her path!
I was torn this month, whether to add Autumn as a Hero on this newsletter, or on the Climate Action Canada 365 newsletter! Make sure to follow that one, as well, as I'm sure she'll pop up there from time to time:
??Music of the Week:
The musician of the week is Marcel Gagnon! He is a composer, singer, and guitarist, and an elder from the Lheidli T'enneh Band. He was nominated for a The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences/The JUNO Awards in 2002, and has recorded three other albums. You can hear some of his music on our IndigiBeats 365 Playlist on Spotify.
??3 Posts from this Week:
"Lyackson and Cowichan Tribes both can build that community that they're looking for," Eby said at a Saturday morning announcement in the?Skutz Falls parking lot.??"[They] can realize the vision of life with dignity, celebration, family, tradition, that was long denied."?
“This is a key moment in the history of Indigenous Peoples, and APTN has a fundamental role to play in protecting and revitalizing our languages." said Monika Ille, APTN CEO.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for my people,” new chair Ashley St. Pierre said, “considering the residential schools, and here I am as an Indigenous person sitting as a chair for a school board. I’m very touched about it, and it’s of huge significance.”
??Recommendation of the Week:
I know this is short notice, the day before, but May 16th is Moose Hide Campaign Day! Here's a great example of an event you can attend to help take a stand against gender-based violence. I am a community champion for the Moose Hide Campaign in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, and we're having TWO events, with one in Williams Lake and another Walk to End Violence at the North Central Local Government Association convention I am attending. I am so proud of our communities for supporting these events. Raven Lacerte even sent us a personalized video for our event. Thank you so much for everything you're doing, Moose Hide Campaign!
??From Michael:
