DEVELOPERS NO LONGER HAVE TO MITIGATE HARM TO NATURE BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO BUILD

Environmental bodies have lost the power block building projects

It has long been the case that new infrastructure projects have had to commit to mitigating harm to the natural environment, including protecting endangered species before being approved.?

However, in a disappointing move last week, the UK government will no longer require measures such as individual site-level assessments and environmental mitigation works on new developments.?

As a result, regulators will no longer be able to demand that developers take steps to protect the environment. Instead, potential developments will be given the green light so long as they make a payment to the Nature Restoration Fund.?

While the measures have been implemented to help solve the UK housing shortage, critics have urged there will be a “huge risk that environmental safeguards are weakened” based on this new approach.

The organisers of Earth Day have announced the theme for 2025. So klaxon alert, it’s your time to start making plans now for how you’ll be getting involved!?

The theme for this year is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ and as the name suggests relates to encouraging the use of greener energy. However, improving air quality is also on the list of this year’s objectives.?

Whether you are an individual or have a business, everyone can make a difference this Earth Day. You could join an event near you or even organise one yourself. Likewise, you may wish to blog about planet-friendly ideas to inspire others.?
