Career Frustration: Will it fuel you or fail you?

Careering is hard.?AmIright??Sure, adulting is tough, but CAREERING - whew.?Move that heavy rock up the hill over and over, week in, week out, year in, year out.?And look out for all the pitfalls, barriers, steep cliffs, and hungry animals along the way.

SO many twists, turns, highs, lows, things you control with ferocity, and things you don’t have a prayer of controlling…ever.

How’s this for a list of things you should be doing for your career...

Find Your Passion

Live Your Dream

Get Paid What You Are Worth

Know Your Brand

Market Yourself

Network Incessantly

Don’t Settle

Believe in Yourself

…Does that about cover the latest swath of career advice headlines??I’m sure I’ve missed some.

When I worked as a career coach, I talked with hundreds of people who shared the same story over and over, and it goes a little something like this…

I have [15, 20, 25, 30] years of professional experience in [Industry A, B and C], but I can’t find a great job that I love and pays me what I want.?I apply to jobs, and I can’t get interviews, or call backs.?When I do get interviews, I’m told that I’m [overqualified, under-qualified, not the right fit for some undisclosed reason].?I’ve decided my only option is to [work for myself, change careers, do something drastic to get out of the rejection cycle].

And this is ultimately the nearly-despairing, definitely-not-funny punchline:

I CAN’T BELIEVE I AM [XX ] YEARS OLD AND I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO START OVER!

Listen, I’ve been there.?I can empathize.?I’ve felt this same frustration, wishing there was more in the bank account/retirement account/vacation account.?Wishing my current professional status (read: income and job satisfaction) lived up to the stellar job I’d done talking up my skills in my resume and LinkedIn profile.

SO - Here’s the bad news. (It’s not that bad)

Your ego is bruised.?Maybe a bit broken.?You are having FEELINGS.?It’s ok.?It’s good even!?Because nothing beautiful in life happens without our wise and often stifled emotions having their say.?It’s ok to feel frustrated and beat down.?

But ultimately, that frustration can either fuel you or fail you.

For those willing to lean into their most vulnerable (and therefore bravest) selves, they will use the frustration as fuel for the hardest question of all…

“What do I need to release that’s holding me back from leveling up my career?”

Perhaps it’s time to RELEASE things like:

  • I don’t have time to invest in a new career
  • I’ve restarted [X] times already
  • I can’t afford it
  • I shouldn’t have to start over from scratch
  • This sucks
  • I have SO MUCH EXPERIENCE!
  • I don’t want to be a newbie again
  • I’m an expert in my industry, someone just needs to recognize it

STOP!

If you are still reading, you may be part of a truly elite group of people willing to let go of what’s not serving you, who are hungry for growth, have decided to release their egos, and are ready to do what it takes to LEVEL UP in their career. Here's how I define LEVELING UP: more autonomy, more resources with which to be successful, more life-work balance, more appreciation for your unique approach, a better team culture, and meaningful, lasting reward$ for your precious skills, time and energy.

I'll be real - most people aren’t truly ready for a role in sales.?Their egos offer a safe haven from the stress and challenges of the learning and growth needed to thrive here.?Their mindset is fixed on what should be rather than what could be.

So if you are still reading my words, and you are not turned off, tuned out, and tucked back into your same old-same old routine, then maybe, just maybe, you are ready to hear what could be.?
