Developing resilience is a crucial skill in navigating life's challenges, and one key aspect of resilience is the ability to problem solve effectively. Whether it's handling personal setbacks or professional obstacles, mastering problem-solving techniques can greatly enhance resilience and lead to personal and professional growth.?
Benefits of Learning Problem-Solving Skills
Learning how to effectively solve problems brings a multitude of benefits both personally and professionally. By honing problem-solving skills, individuals become better equipped to overcome adversity, adapt to change, and bounce back from setbacks. In the workplace, effective problem solvers are highly valued for their ability to find innovative solutions, increase productivity, and foster a positive work environment. Personally, problem-solving skills enhance decision-making abilities, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.?
Problem Solving & Resilience
Problem solving, and resilience go hand in hand. Resilient individuals approach challenges with a proactive mindset, viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable barriers. By tackling problems head-on and persevering in the face of adversity, individuals strengthen their resilience muscles, becoming better equipped to handle future challenges with confidence and optimism.?
How to Get Started
Begin your journey towards building resilience through effective problem-solving by starting small and gradually expanding your problem-solving skills. Start by addressing day-to-day personal challenges at home, such as managing household chores or resolving conflicts with family members. As you gain confidence in your problem-solving abilities, transition to tackling workplace concerns and offering solutions to colleagues or supervisors.?
When faced with a problem, resist the urge to dwell on it for too long. Give yourself a limited amount of time to process your emotions, then shift your focus to finding solutions.
Don't ignore problems or avoid confronting them. Instead, adopt the SAP approach – Discover, Design, and Deliver – to effectively address challenges.
Problem-Solving, the SAP way.
SAP stands for Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing. It’s a German multinational software corporation that provides enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to manage business operations and customer relations. The below is a condensed version of SAP's Design Thinking process, simplified for you and your everyday problem-solving needs. Happy problem solving!
1) Discover (Define the Need):?
In this phase, we define the need by identifying the specific challenge we are facing. We take into account how the problem affects both ourselves and others involved. Additionally, we challenge personal assumptions and bias by seeking feedback from trusted peers.
Problem: Feeling overwhelmed with managing household chores and responsibilities.

2) Design (Identify Solution):??
During the Design phase, we brainstorm solution ideas, gathering diverse perspectives. We generate multiple solution possibilities using "How might I (we)?" statements, such as "How might I streamline my daily routines?" and "How might we divide household chores more efficiently?
Consider all ideas without judgment. This is also a great time to consider the tools or resources needed while narrowing down the best solution.
3) Deliver (Take Action/ Practice):??
In the Deliver phase, we take action, putting the solution into practice. It's important to remain flexible. Making adjustments as needed along the way, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.
Solutions: Establish a chore chart outlining tasks for each family member and a schedule for completing them. Hold a family meeting to discuss responsibilities and make any necessary adjustments.
Conclusion
By mastering problem-solving skills and adopting a proactive approach to challenges, individuals can cultivate resilience and navigate life's ups and downs with confidence and resilience. Start small, practice regularly, and embrace each challenge as an opportunity for growth. Remember, resilience is not about avoiding problems but about facing them head-on and emerging stronger on the other side.?
