Build a Morning Routine for Success

I recall when I worked for a start-up, waking up in a state of flight or flight, rushing to take a shower..my heart beating fast, lump in my throat and unease in my tummy.

A zillion thoughts would rush through my head at any one time.

When is my first meeting?

Will my boss be in a good mood?

How many emails will be in my inbox by the time I reach my desk?

I would rush from one activity to another, barely coming up for air.

Some nights were fully sleepless, while others would leave me waking up with a sadness and heaviness it would be difficult to shake for the whole day.

I desired to have my morning routine back, but I was “too busy” and caught in a negative spiral that left me stuck in reaction-mode.

It took me to the brink of burnout before I started to prioritise my morning routine.

Don't let it take you to yours.

Prioritising yourself in the morning is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

This small action impacts every single moment of your day, which impacts your week, which impacts your year, your life..you get the picture.

It doesn't have to always be a huge song and dance. As little as 10 minutes can be enough. The beauty is you get to feel into it and decide what your body needs on any given day.

And if your boss doesn't like it, I strongly suggest you have a word with them or rethink them as an employer.

They say those who don't have five minutes to meditate, should meditate for ten. And this is true for any morning routine!

If we don't think we have the time, we are the ones who need to give ourselves it most!


My morning routine does this for me:

Clears the stuck energy that builds up through the night as I sleep

Allows me time to create an intention for the day, and decide how I want the day to go rather than allowing external forces to influence how I feel first

Grounds me into the present moment

Provides clarity and focus

Makes me feel amazing!

I am definitely not perfect and there are days I miss my morning routine, but I always notice the difference in how I feel that day.


Questions to help you create the perfect morning routine for you:

Take note of how you feel when you first wake up:

Do you need to calm your nervous system in the morning? Or do you need to wake up and get energised?

Is your mind busy and cluttered? Or clear and calm?

Set your intention for the day, through journalling, internal reflection or focused movement like yoga. Is your focus on being present? Being of service? Making healthier choices?

Move your body in any way you wish – dance, running, gym, yoga or some simple stretching

What affirmation or mantra will support you throughout your day?


Pro tips:

1. Create two versions of your morning routine. One for when you have extra time, and a second for when you are short on time.

2. Create a dedicated space in your house or apartment for your morning routine to take place. keep your journal there, as well as inscence, candles, a yoga matt or pillow.
