Bangladesh’s Denim Dynamics

Bangladesh’s Denim Dynamics

Facing a critical juncture, Bangladesh’s garment industry, including its denim sector, confronts the ambitious target of doubling exports by 2030 amid global market shifts. This article delves into the complexities of denim trade analytics, challenges of sustainable growth, and strategic shifts necessary for Bangladesh to maintain its pivotal role.

The Bangladesh garment industry is at a crossroad. The question is: Where should that industry go from here? At the recent Bangladesh Denim Expo, professionals suggested that the Bangladesh garment export industry can reach its target - $100 billion garment exports in 2030 - provided denim exports doubled during the same period. Is this possible?

Imports by the European Union

Analysing denim exports is very difficult for the following reasons:?

  • ? The EU Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) does not even list denim jeans as a product. As a result, we must use import data for all woven cotton pants.
  • ? The International Trade Centre has not yet published (at the time of writing this) any 2023 data.
  • ? The International Trade Centre lists trade only by value, and not units.

These are serious obstacles to successful analysis because as we can see from Tables 1 and 2 below, the EU is Bangladesh’s largest customer for cotton woven pants.
