Coping with World News

The internet and social media have changed the way our society consumes news. For the past couple of years, we have seen anxiety-inducing news about a global pandemic, potential wars, natural disasters, mass shootings, social injustices, and the list goes on and on. You may find yourself wanting to be as informed as possible, so you search for updates throughout the day. News updates are typically on a constant cycle, 24/7, and easily accessible. However, this could be contributing to stress and anxiety about what is going on in the world. There is no surprise that constantly seeing negative headlines has taken a toll on our mental health. You could even be stumbling upon these headlines simply by checking your social media accounts. Either way, we are being exposed to multiple stressors on a daily basis. Below are 5 tips on how to help cope with the world events that may be contributing to your stress and anxiety.?

1. Focus on what you can control

Focusing on what you can control in uncertain times can help reduce feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. There may be things you can do to help those directly affected. If you’re in a place to help financially, you can find reliable organizations to donate to. You can help spread awareness of certain issues by sharing informative posts on social media. You may even be able to find organizations in your community that you can get involved with if you want a more hands-on approach. If the suggestions above feel overwhelming, you can focus on controlling your experience on a personal level. Focus on your wellbeing by doing things to promote positive mental, physical, and emotional health.?

2. Limit exposure to news outlets and social media?

It’s important to be informed, but it’s okay to prioritize your mental health when you notice the headlines are starting to take a toll. If reading news articles and social media posts leave you feeling anxious and uncertain, try limiting your exposure to them. We often feel guilty if we aren’t reading every update, staying informed, or sharing helpful resources on social media. Simply remind yourself, that you are allowed to take the time you need to be okay. Not posting or reading about a world event does not mean that you do not care. You can also utilize settings on social media apps to mute triggering words or topics.?

3. Practice stress management?

Experiencing increased feelings of stress in times of uncertainty is completely normal. Utilize stress management techniques to help manage your symptoms. A good place to start is taking care of some of your basic needs. For example, exercising, eating nutritious meals, and getting enough sleep. You'd be amazed at how much of a difference it will make. These basic needs should always be a priority, however, when we get busy or overwhelmed, they’re often the first things we neglect.?

4. Reach out for support?

Reaching out to individuals in your support system can help you cope with anxiety-inducing headlines. If you choose to share with them how you’re feeling, you may learn that they are experiencing a lot of the same feelings. Make a decision to share positive news stories you see in the headlines to help brighten each other's day. Spend time doing things with others that make you feel good. Don’t forget that you can always look into receiving professional support from a therapist if you don’t already have one. If you do have a therapist, bring up some of your thoughts and feelings with them. You will not be the first client to express having a hard time coping with current events!?

5. Understand and normalize your experience?

Many individuals are reporting an increase in anxiety due to these uncertain times. Over the past few years, we have seen multiple world events take place that can leave us feeling uncertain about the future. Know that you are not alone and you can develop healthy coping skills to help manage stress and anxiety.

Our access to information about world events can encourage us to get involved, advocate for what we’re passionate about, and increase our empathy for others. But we cannot take care of others if we are not taking care of ourselves.
