Coping With a Power Outage

It happens. The power goes out. The problem is that our clients don’t know that we’ve lost power and don’t realize that their work has been thrown off track. Creating a plan ahead of time is a good idea.
Here’s how I handle power outages in my business:
- I have a hotspot. A hotspot is a small, portable device that delivers the internet even when you have no electricity. It’s also great when you’re traveling, to ensure you always have an internet connection, no matter where you are.
- I keep my equipment charged. I do my best to keep my laptop, cell phone and hotspot charged all the time. When I know a storm is coming, I make sure my backup cell phone chargers are full as well.
- I store client information in more than one place. Although I work on a desktop computer, my client data is also accessible on my laptop. This way, I’m not out of luck if my desktop is not available.
- I notify my clients. Unless I’m able to complete all of my scheduled work on time, I notify my clients as soon as possible, so that we can work out a Plan B for getting their work done.
- I relax. If I can finish my work great, but if I can’t, once I let my clients know, I let it go and enjoy the downtime.
Power outages can be inconvenient and disruptive but with a simple plan, you can still take care of your clients and yourself.
