COPE BETTER IN THE HEAT BY BREATHING BETTER

COPE BETTER IN THE HEAT BY BREATHING BETTER

Did you know that we lose 42% more water breathing when breathing through our mouth?

?

What if we switched to slow nose breathing?

?

  • We’d be more hydrated
  • We’d feel cooler & calmer
  • We’d moisten and prepare the air for our lungs better
  • We’d not irritate our throats with dry air
  • We’d filter bacteria, viruses, particles and allergens
  • We’d feel less fatigued in our muscles
  • We’d be able to think clearer

?

BUT, for over-breathers (specifically mouth breathers) it isn’t as easy as switching to their nose.

?

Why?

?

Because:

  • Their nose “feels too small”
  • The airflow feels insufficient
  • Dizziness comes on
  • Gasping for air happens

?

Why?

Because over-breathers have negatively trained their breathing habits to reduce their tolerance to carbon dioxide (CO2). Many think we need to breathe more to get more oxygen, but in fact, by over-breathing we are reducing oxygenation of the brain, muscles and cells because we aren't retraining enough CO2.

?

Add that to the additional dehydration.

?

What can be done?

We can retrain breathing habits so that the nose feels sufficient, even through one nostril when congested. We can learn how to retrain the diaphragm and draw air slower and deeper into the lungs. We can learn how to naturally decongest. We can benefit from retraining our tongue position to guarantee nose breathing all the time (except for when we talk). We can calm ourselves down when we feel breathless and take control of panic attacks and our nervous system in stressful situations.

I’m a former lifelong mouth breather who hasn’t lost my nose to a cold since I retrained my breathing and can fast walk and cycle without switching to my mouth. I’m not a runner ;-p
