COP30 Food Initiative
Mike - Michael Oliveira
Creating regenerative, circular and inclusive futures
About a year ago, Maurício Alcantara and Fabrício Muriana presented a bold proposal: to supply COP 30 with food sourced from the areas around Belém, prioritizing agroecology and the sociobiodiversity of the Amazon.
At that moment, I thought: of course! This should be the natural path for an event of such global importance in climate discussions. However, I discovered that food at the official and unofficial pavilions of the COPs is rarely treated as a priority. What usually prevails is a generic menu that fails to highlight local culture.
In the case of Belém and the Amazon, this reality is even more critical. Studies show that around 80% of the food in the city comes from other regions of Brazil. It’s easier to find fruit produced in the interior of S?o Paulo in Belém than to find fresh a?aí or cupua?u. This dependency is evident in supermarkets, street markets, restaurants, hotels, distribution centers, and even schools.
This situation is paradoxical, given the immense diversity of food that the Amazon can offer. Despite significant logistical challenges in the region, data reveal a lack of supply routes and demand for local products. Urban and peri-urban agriculture in Belém has the potential to supply vegetables and greens to 1.7 million people, surpassing the city’s population of 1.5 million.
We decided to support the COP 30 Food initiative and encouraged Maurício, Fabrício from Instituto Regenera , and the partner organizations – Instituto Comida do Amanh? , Instituto Fome Zero , and AssoBio – to take the idea further. We sought the involvement of the federal government and motivated the state of Pará and local authorities to make public commitments regarding the food at COP and its broader impacts in Belém.

With support from Purpose (Gab and team) and the IKEA Foundation , we conceptualized the public launch of the initiative, which took place today, involving plenty of grassroots of farmers, indigenous, quilombolas, ribeirinhos and officials from the Ministério do Desenvolvimento Agrário - MDA , MDS - Ministério do Desenvolvimento e Assistência Social, Família e Combate à Fome , the Governo Federal , and BNDES the initiative has been launched and already converted into a public commitment.
Today marks the beginning of a transformation aimed at reshaping the food at COP and leaving a lasting legacy for Belém and its residents.

2 周Hey Mike! Thanks for sharing this project. The narrative is amazing, precise, and clear. The project is great, but many great projects can fail due to poor communication. Bye bye!

3 周I couldn't describe the challenges better. I highlight the official recommendation from CONSEA, fruit of incidence of this initiative, to foster family farming and indigenous production in the official catering. We already have some agreements, but it is time to organize data and follow the next steps for a proper implementation that actually brings sociobiodiversity to the table of COP 30.
