COP29 and Türkiye's Sustainability Steps

Saim A???, CEO of Motor A?in and Chairman of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) 52nd Committee, continues his observations and meetings at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Highlighting the importance of being part of COP as a member of ITO, one of the world's largest chambers, A??? stated:

This is ITO's first participation in this summit. Being here makes it even clearer how accurate a decision this was. We believe that all sectors will return from here with many valuable insights.

He noted the unique atmosphere at COP29, created by bringing together influential figures, institutions, and organizations from around the world. A??? shared his observations as follows:

The world has not yet reached a full consensus on managing and solving the climate crisis. We do not have a clear picture that allows us to say, 'This is the problem, and this is the solution.' When we talk about the climate crisis, we are dealing with a multi-dimensional and very comprehensive issue. Therefore, every negotiation held here is valuable, and many are binding. In this regard, it is inevitable that these discussions will influence subsequent processes.

At COP29, financing has emerged as a significant topic in managing and resolving the climate crisis. Developed and developing countries naturally do not share the same level of financial responsibility in addressing the issue, which remains a critical point of debate.

From our country's perspective, it is essential to make this topic understandable and attract attention across different segments of society. In this respect, I believe that ITO's efforts to explain the importance of COP to its more than 700,000 members will provide an effective environment for information and awareness. Efforts toward sustainability and the future must go hand in hand with the progress of industries. It is necessary to analyze the realities of the world today and tomorrow and produce solutions. In this regard, participating in such comprehensive and high-quality gatherings, staying informed, and benefiting from this atmosphere is crucial for correctly positioning the role we will play.

Carbon emissions are among the most critical topics. However, it is evident from ongoing negotiations that perspectives differ based on countries and sectors. In other words, when discussing carbon emissions, it is crucial to note that there is no single truth. As representatives of our sector, we are closely following these evaluations to obtain productive outcomes. In addition, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and biodiversity conservation are among the important issues on the agenda.

As we know, Türkiye is a candidate to host COP31. I believe that hosting such a summit would be a perfect fit for our country. It requires a high level of organizational skill, but Türkiye has the discipline and dynamics to achieve this.

It is worth noting that Azerbaijan has carried out a successful organization as the host of COP29. Although the hosting decision was finalized only 11 months ago, they have conducted a solid preparation process and organized well. Some of the personnel at the summit work on a voluntary basis. Professional staff wear dark green uniforms, while volunteers wear light green. Their hospitality, helpfulness, and friendliness are exceptional, creating a positive impression on people from all over the world. I must also emphasize that there is a special affection and interest toward Turkish visitors in Azerbaijan, which is a source of additional happiness.

Establishing diplomatic and social influence at this summit is important for Türkiye's COP31 candidacy. Hosting COP31 would significantly raise awareness about sustainability and the climate crisis across the country, pave the way for new steps to be taken, and contribute to tourism and promotion efforts. I also believe it will be beneficial in terms of technology transfer and financial support.
