COP28: DUBAI 2023

Delegates from many countries gathered at the 28th Conference of the Parties to discuss the global climate crisis. After several negotiations, they discussed and agreed on a final climate action deal. Key highlights of the agreement included emission reduction targets, adaptation and resilience, financial commitments, and nature-based solutions.

While the COP28 climate action deal was hailed as a breakthrough, critics were not impressed. They argue that the language used, such as ''transitioning away'' from fossil fuels, was vague and did not signal a clear end to oil and gas. They also identified several shortcomings in the agreement, such as ambition gaps, falling short of what is required to meet 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050, a lack of enforcement mechanisms, the uneven distribution of financial and technological resources, the undue influence of corporations, the lack of inclusivity, adaptation funding challenges and nature-based solutions concerns.

What next... until COP29, Azerbaijan... November 2024?

Implementing the COP28 agreement will require governments to work closely with key stakeholders to translate the agreements into tangible outcomes. Tasks will include realigning domestic policies and developing robust plans for nationally determined contributions (NDC).

Climate change constitutes a significant peril for smallholder farmers, placing them at the forefront of its adverse effects. To adapt to changing conditions, farmers need cost-effective and dependable solutions, such as drought-resistant seeds, solar irrigation, and organic fertilizers. To cope with the risks and losses, farmers need access to affordable financial and insurance support. To foster a sustainable, resilient food system, farmers need policy and incentive reforms that empower them to adapt to the evolving challenges of climate change.
