COP27 and Teijin’s Solutions for a Livable Planet

With today marking the start of COP27, we wanted to reflect on our involvement and innovation announced at last year’s COP26. By being a company who is at the forefront of sustainable solutions that innovate in markets across so many industries, Teijin understands – and acts on – the importance of reflecting on previous events to move forward.

At Glasgow’s COP26, the Envision Racing Formula E Formula E Team presented the world’s first electric two-seater race car. The incredible race car incorporates Teijin’s Tenax? #carbonfiber solution and was developed by Envision Racing in partnership with Johnson Matthey . This collaborative approach allowed us to work with experts in the relevant fields to achieve such #innovative and exciting results with the use of Tenax?. Tenax? combines strength and high modulus elasticity whilst maintaining a low density, ensuring top mechanical performance even at extreme pressures and high speeds. It also withstands high heat and allows design freedom without compromising driver safety.

At the event, Envision Racing also showcased their new driver suit, designed by OMP Racing and incorporating Teijin’s meta-aramid Teijinconex?. The outer layer of the garment consists of an ultra-light fabric made with Teijinconex? neo to resist temperatures of up to 400°C without burning or melting. Teijinconex? neo is produced in line with all chemical industry environmental standards, including REACH. The race suit ensures performance whilst keeping safety as a number one priority.

Teijin’s Tenax? carbon fibers and intermediate materials are being used for applications in the renewable energy industry. When societal expectations are constantly pushed for #sustainable energy, Teijin is delivering quality solutions with "green" approaches, such as in large wind-power turbine blades, advanced aircraft wings, and hydrogen tanks. Tenax? is also used to achieve increased production speed and safety, extend design freedom, and help customers achieve targets for increased #sustainability.

Whilst COP27 is an event which showcases how sustainability is being approached globally, Teijin is proud to say our goals stretch many years into the future.

Teijin has made it clear that our long-term goal is to achieve internal net-zero emissions by 2050. The targets include reducing internal CO2 emissions by 30% and two-thirds of total supply chain emissions by 15% as of 2030 compared to 2018 levels.

Our long-term goal is to create and push for a #circular value chain by minimizing both waste and the use of virgin materials, instead promoting #recycled materials. To achieve this, we are constantly working to reduce carbon emissions, set new standards for #recycling our high-performance materials and create transparent material streams.
