#COP26: Real Action and Smart Money Flows Needed to Save Our Planet

This event is like the combination of Super Bowl, a Royal Wedding, and the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show – 25,000 government representatives, media, and C-suite executives from around the world are expected in Glasgow. Is it worth the hype? What might it accomplish? What are they talking about?

Here is what you need to know.

What is a COP?

These climate meetings have been launched in the year 1996: when countries signed a treaty promising to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and prevent dangerous changes to the climate. Almost every year since then, the parties to this agreement have met to talk about what still needs to be done. It's called a Conference of Parties, or COP. This is the 26th such meeting. Therefore, its name: COP26.

What is on the COP’s agenda?

There are themed days, starting with the grand opening ceremony on November 1st, 2021. For us, "Finance Day" is one of the most important days to observe – because in the end, only money steers how fast or slow sustainable projects will be pursued by companies and governments. And, the so-called "green money" is the new superpower.

The Glasgow meeting’s intention is to force countries to declare their plans to cut emissions and maybe go bigger. According to the nonprofit Climate Action Tracker , major polluting countries have submitted plans that are either "critically insufficient" or "highly insufficient." They include Russia, China, Brazil, India and Australia.

Which nations’ decision-makers are most relevant?

The world’s countries emit vastly different amounts of heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. It is very obvious that Climate Change can become a successful undertaking only if China is an (increasingly) active part of the solution. The U.S. is still the number 2 greenhouse gas issuer (full details here https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions ) but has huge potential–especially as still the World’s leading capital center–to become a true leader in climate technology, such as solar and wind, and application of innovative, renewable energy transportation systems. Nevertheless, it is important that everyone and every government should become more proactive – or at least remain active in fighting pro-green and sustainable solutions to save our planet.?

How works the measurement of corporate Greenhouse Gases (GHG)?

According to the leading GHG Protocol corporate standard, a company’s greenhouse gas emissions are classified in three scopes: Scope 1 and 2 are mandatory to report, whereas scope 3 is voluntary and the hardest to monitor. However, companies succeeding in reporting all three scopes will gain a sustainable competitive advantage.

What would be "quick wins" for our planet?

Not all of these suggestions are print-ready for John Kerry and the other political supporters of real change in climate politics, however, some items are the real game-changers this conference is seeking so desperately:?

  • Global limitation of plastic bottles and nano-plastics starting June 1st, 2022.
  • Global ban of deforestation (overseen by a U.N. body) by freezing World Bank deposits of countries not enforcing it; bringing wood products on the blockchain to track illegal deforestation activities
  • Financial incentives (U.N., World Bank, E.U., China Development Bank) for companies that actively engage in water management in 3rd world countries
  • Government support by fast-track regulation of dedicated marketplace(s), where sustainable investment products will be traded, cleared, and settled. Disclosure: Global Green Xchange is forming one of the leading marketplaces already.
  • Global ban of mixed materials which are highly complex or even impossible to recycle
  • Tax incentives for companies disclosing their E-S-G activities timely and (!) have a year-over-year positive performance in reducing to be determined ESG elements such as GHG emissions, increasingly using renewable energy etc. – I have to admit, this is a "discussion bomb" for every finance minister, however, this incentive would work from day one perfectly!
